Jekel Malbec -2000 (WE-35567)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

It's not often that you find an American Malbec that's so easy to drink. Aromas are of coffee and nut, and maybe some dust or wheat. On the palate it's understated but sturdy, with soft tannins and a wheaty-dusty overlay to its plum plum fruit. A straightforward wine, of solid quality. Drink now–2009. 1 Note

Jekel Bordeaux-style Red Blend -2001 (WE-35570)

This wine's blackberry fruit wears a hearty overlay of chocolate and coffee. The nose follows the same profile, with a dash of anise or eucalyptus. Acids on the finish are firm and crisp. A food-friendly wine; a blend of 59% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, with small parts Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. 1 Note

When I sniffed this wine I thought it was a big Beaujolais. It has a carbonic maceration, fresh grapey scent. The flavors are young and zesty, too, suggesting tart red and black cherries. Highly acidic, it’s a wine to savor with gusto and good, comfortable food. 1 Note

J. Lohr Riesling -2005 (WE-63165)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

The residual sugar is 2.3 grams, which makes this Riesling a little sweet. But it is very acidic and crisp, which gives it that fascinating sweet-tart tension you get in a good German Riesling. At the same time, the wine is enormously flavorful in citrus, honeysuckle, peach, nectarine, apricot and vanilla flavors. The Arroyo Seco AVA gets credit for that magical combo of ripeness and acidity. Entirely stainless fermented and aged, this Riesling has a low alcohol of only 12.1 percent. 1 Note

Another fine contender from the Central Coast region, it has a mineral and ripe fruit nose with lively, full fruit flavors. Firm and round on the palate, with a long, classy finish. 1 Note

Packaged in a fancy bottle, it stakes a claim to class. Does it succeed? Yes, with pretty apple and spice aromas and rich apple- citrus flavors. Tart acids make it bright, and there are some nice dusty tannins. Doesn’t quite achieve complexity, but it’s a great drink, and, at this price, one of the year’s best values in a white apéritif-style wine. 1 Note

Ventana Riesling -2009 (WE-122427)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

With high acidity making for a stinging mouthfeel, and 1.3% residual sugar giving some, but not enough, soft relief, the result is a compromise between a sweet and a dry wine, which will satisfy fans of neither. Still, it’s ultraclean, and the apple and honeysuckle flavors are appealing. 1 Note

Wente Riesling -2006 (WE-71346)

Made very much in a German style, with low alcohol (by California standards), very high acidity and residual sugar of 2%. Shows well-ripened apricot, pineapple, peach, honeysuckle, vanilla meringue and Asian spice flavors. 1 Note

Ventana Riesling -2001 (WE-23011)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Easy-drinking and clean, with mineral and acidic crispness from high acidity, and delicate flavors of citrus, apricot and apple. Has a full degree of residual sugar, but that brilliant acidity makes it drink almost dry. The finish turns tart and almond-skin bitter. 1 Note

Ventana Gewürztraminer -2001 (WE-23012)

Pretty much as good as California Gewurz gets. Offers up a myriad of orange, honeysuckle, white peach, fig, cinnamon and vanilla flavors, off-dry. Very nice acidity, bright and shining, preserves balance. 1 Note
