Atlas Peak Chardonnay -2000 (WE-13198)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

From high above Napa Valley, a curiously lean wine. Except for a massive dose of oak that contributes sweet vanillaand smoke, it's tight to the point of austerity. What flavors there are veer toward lemon and apples. A leesy flavor shows up in the tart, dry finish. 1 Note

Peach, orange and spice aromas open this pretty, well-balanced wine. The palate offers melon, peach and some interesting earth/mineral accents. Good mouthfeel, slightly creamy but not mushy, and a nice, clean finish to wrap things up. 1 Note

Here’s another good Chard from a vintage that produced a lot of them. It’s ripe and aromatic, with a depth of peach-apple fruit, spices and smoky oak. A hint of lees and a creamy texture add complexity. 1 Note

Atlas Peak Sangiovese -1997 (WE-9162)

A juicy, delicious wine; the best Atlas Peak Sangiovese so far. It’s got pronounced berry-fruit flavors, with a peppery, spicy component and a rich earthiness. Soft and round, it’s easy to drink, and while not especially complex, offers plenty of pleasure. Finishes with just a slight hit of tannins. 1 Note

Here’s a very dry red wine that will strike fruit lovers as lean and herbal, although there are some cherry flavors, as well as brisk tannins. Pretty ordinary stuff. 1 Note

An interesting wine with tight acids and tannins and compressed fruit, the result of austere mountain growing conditions. Flavors range from lemons to green apples, but the overlay of oak is strong, with a powerful toasty note. 1 Note

This winery’s workhorse red is bone-dry and tart, with puckery acids and sticky tannins that demand olive oil, butter or cheese. The flavors are lean and herbal. —S.H. 1 Note

This winery continues to make major strides. Of course, in such a ripe year, the fruit is lovely, bringing forth all sorts of berries, coffee, earth and spice. Supporting all of those sweet flavors are a soft voluptuous texture and near-perfect tannins. This is the best regular Sangiovese ever from Atlas Peak. 1 Note

Here’s a fresh, young, fruity wine, rich in cherries of all kinds: pies, just-picked off the tree, jam. It’s balanced with crisp acidity, and is silky and light-bodied, like a Beaujolais. Easy now with steaks and chops. 1 Note

Cameron Hughes Cabernet Sauvignon -2006 (WE-100508)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

An eccentric, although likeable, Cab. It shows the dryness and tannic astringency that Atlas Peak Cabs are famous for, along with upfront, accessibly New World flavors of cherry jam, black currants and cedar. Hard to know if it’s an ager, but it’s a pretty good wine. 1 Note
