M. Chapoutier Grenache -2003 (WE-66527)

Some Banyuls can be pruny, but this version from the Rhône-based firm of Chapoutier is remarkably fresh. The wine’s sweet, plummy fruit features herbal touches on the nose, but also enough cocoa-like flavors to pair with chocolate and a softly dusty texture to the finish. 1 Note

Les Clos de Paulilles Grenache -2005 (WE-68271)

Superripe Grenache gives this fortified dessert wine (16% alcohol) distinctly chocolaty overtones, but there’s also an overripe note of prunes. Despite that, it doesn’t pack the alcoholic punch or massive weight of Port, making it relatively easy to drink, with an affinity for chocolate desserts. 1 Note

I have long enjoyed Dr. Parcé's dry red wines made under the Collioure appellation label. Banyuls is the traditional dessert wine of the region. This is fabulous, with its open-knit, candied character, dried roses and a touch of mint. It finishes long and soft, with every nuance tightly defined. It's not cheap, but it's special. 1 Note

Gérard Bertrand Red Blend -1951 (WE-126680)

With just shy of 1,000 bottles produced, this will be hard to find. Dried fruit flavors of raspberry and red plum dominate the nose and mouth, while notes of sweet mulled spice, clove-pricked orange rind, pepper, walnut skin and bittersweet cocoa glimmer throughout. Full and rich but lively, with medium acidity and a zippiness to the finish. Enjoyable now, but this will benefit from another 5–10 years in the cellar. 1 Note

Cross between a Port and a Sherry....lighter than a port but less sweet than sherry. Slight spicyness.

Paired extremely well with golden beet ravioli filled with White-trulled Chevre cheese, dressed with Avocado Oil and Young Grenache-based balsamic vinegar.
