Fairly lightweight, without any of the distinguishing marks of this normally somewhat assertive varietal. It shows hints of melon and citrus, however, and will not offend. 1 Note

A very clean, tasty wine, with pronounced flavors of grass, citrus fruits, sweet figs and peppery spices. Has a ripely honeyed edge, but a crisp streak of acidity keeps it fresh and balanced. 1 Note

From a more obscure growing region north of Napa and east of Mendocino, there is some pear flavor on top of pronounced oak. Decent in the mouth with enough acidity to protect the fruit from oak overload. Lemony and light, with a lot of buttery, oaky, soft character. Tastes better at first and then loses steam. 1 Note

Here’s an herbaceous, lemony wine with those telltale cat aromas and flavors. In the mouth, it’s clean and citrusy, with just enough acid to balance. Finishes dry and smooth. 1 Note

Melon, citrus and herb notes are well balanced in this pleasing, refreshing, light wine. Bright and fresh to the end, it’s perfect for summer quaffing. 1 Note

A difficult Zin to like. Opens with funky aromas of socks and that offputting smell doesn’t blow off. In the mouth, it’s jammy and unnaturally sweet. 1 Note

Spicy, ripe fruit, with an edge to it. Well-defined wine, which shows briar, toast, berry and coffee flavors sprinkled throughout. Well-built, sturdy, a little hot, but balanced and long. 1 Note

When Beringer couldn’t find Zin in Napa Valley at a decent price, they turned to this little-known appellation to the east. It’s not bad. The grapes got ripe enough to produce Zin’s briary, peppery flavors, but the wine has a roughness it can’t overcome. These are mountain vineyards, at 2,300 feet, and the soils are volcanic, courtesy of the dormant volcano nearest to San Francisco. 1 Note

Feline, anyone? From the pungent first whiff through the dry, acidic, citrusy finish, this is that kind of Sauvignon Blanc. You either like it or you hate it. It wouldn’t be my first choice. 1 Note

Gulpable, delicious, easy, fruity, delightful; these are a few words that come to mind with this wine. The apple, peach, fig, orange zest and vanilla flavors are framed in zesty acidity, with an ultraclean, dry but ripe finish. 1 Note
