A Wine

Cameron Hughes Cabernet Sauvignon -2005 (WE-78641)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This wine has the solid tannins the mountain is known for, and ripe flavors of blackberries, currants, cherries and chocolate, enriched with new oak. At twenty bucks, and with a low production, it’s a stunning value. With real elegance and even ageworthiness, it’s one of the best at its price point available now. 1 Note

Cameron Hughes Cabernet Sauvignon -2006 (WE-113071)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

A lovely Cabernet, rich and pure and quite frankly delicious. Although it shows those famous mountain tannins, they’re softly refined and entirely drinkable now, letting the blackberry, chocolate, violet and mineral flavors come through. 1 Note

A.S. Kiken Cabernet Blend -2001 (WE-44483)

Kind of pricy for a not-so-ripe Cab with green peppercorn and cherry flavors. There’s a ton of oak, and the wine is dry, with chunky tannins. From Reverie. 1 Note

Graeser Cabernet Franc -2003 (WE-67270)

An awkward wine, soft, simple and with sweet and sour flavors. It’s clean and fruity. Give it a chance. 1 Note

A.S. Kiken Red Blend -2003 (WE-66090)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Here’s a dry, fairly tannic, but polished young red wine, rich in ripely extracted red cherry, smoky leather and oak flavors. It has the elegant mouthfeel of a fine wine, and is very nice now, especially with grilled meats, but should hold and improve for five years or so. 1 Note

Von Strasser Chardonnay -1997 (WE-262)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Burgundian in some ways, but still very Napa in its oaky creaminess. An undercurrent of pear and light citrus fruit leads to a long, smooth, oaky salutation. Lean and clean, it’s more Meursault than monster Chardonnay. 304 cases made. 1 Note

Von Strasser Chardonnay -2000 (WE-22110)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Almost as tight as the Aurora bottling, maybe a shade richer in pear fruit flavors. Still, it’s a lean wine, a structural drink dominated by acids, alcohol and dusty tannins. Oak provides vanilla. The finish turns tart and earthy. 1 Note

Von Strasser Chardonnay -2000 (WE-22111)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

The underlying fruit is tight and lean, with apple and citrus flavors, although it’s fattened up with winemaker bells and whistles. Oak adds a creamy texture and smoky vanilla, while lees contribute more cream. The finish turns acidic and tart. 1 Note

Hawkstone Cabernet Sauvignon -2007 (WE-109764)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Shows the tight structure and hearty tannins of this mountain appellation, on the western side of Napa Valley. There’s a huge core of ripe black currants, with a firm minerality. Give this fine wine four years in the cellar to soften and mellow, or decant now for a few hours. 1 Note
