Xanadu Merlot -2002 (WE-28282)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Xanadu’s winemaker, Conor Lagan, says that this is “a $15 Merlot for $10,”and it’s true. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins, and a nice eucalyptus note envelopingtight mixed plum fruit. More plum, plus some oak, wraps it up. Mercifully lacks the weediness that many value-priced Merlots sport. 1 Note

Xanadu Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon -2002 (WE-28285)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This Shiraz has a one-track mind: Earth, wood, vanilla and plum, from start to finish. Has medium body, and dry tannins on the finish. Sees 40% American oak. 1 Note

Ferngrove Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon -2006 (WE-64337)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Grassy and herbal, this is a slightly pungent rendition of the classic white Bordeaux grapes. It’s simultaneously herbaceous and stony, lacking a bit of flesh in the midpalate, but would serve well to wash down raw oysters. 1 Note

Ferngrove Shiraz-Viognier -2005 (WE-64336)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Ferngrove’s entry-level Shiraz includes 5% Viognier, but it avoids any Viognier-derived stone-fruit character, instead yielding up savory spice scents, a hint of mint and ripe blackberry and plum flavors. Tannins are soft, with acid providing the needed structure. Pepper and clove on the finish bring this bargain to a satisfying close. Drink now. 1 Note

Ferngrove Chardonnay -2004 (WE-53694)

Apple, nut and pear aromas. All its flavor pieces are in place (yellow stone fruit, some vanilla); a good, basic commercial wine. Imported by Partner’s Wine Marketing Group. 1 Note

Ferngrove Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot -2003 (WE-53700)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Aromas are dark but delicate, and quite nice: clay, ink, charcoal. This is clearly a wine with promise, judging by its texture and tannins, yet this bottling just isn’t singing for me. The midpalate wants more stuffing, and the fruit tastes not quite ripe. Keep your eyes on this wine in coming vintages, though. 8,000 cases produced. Ferngrove Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon -2005 (WE-53702)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Grass, hay and peach aromas. Semillon gives it some weight and breadth, and the Sauvignon, a nice mineral and citrus quality. For the price, it wouldn't hurt to keep a bottle or two on hand to serve with a chicken salad, or other light meals. 1 Note

Rocky Gully Shiraz -2004 (WE-46002)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Made by the folks at Frankland Estate, this Shiraz contains 5% Viognier, which didn’t add the nuances that it typically does. Starts off on the nose with black and green pepper, which turns to toast and ink with some time in the glass. Inky on the palate, yes, but also a touch shrill. Imported by USA Wine West. 1 Note

Nimble and understated. Pear and citrus hold the fort down on the palate, surrounded by a cloud of dust and mineral. Just as dusty on the nose. Refreshing and classy; a good opening to an upscale dinner party. Imported by USA Wine West. 1 Note
