The complete opposite of the Beatty Ranch. Soft, almost velvety tannins let the crisply etched, ripe berry fruit shine through. Charming and immediately likable, but probably not an ager. 1 Note
How different this Zin is from the Old Vine. Considerable tannins, and a hard streak that needs time to round out. On airing, the roasted coffee, berry and peppery notes emerge, but they’re buried deep right now. Finishes hot due to high alcohol (15.5 percent). 1 Note
A lean-styled wine, with powdery tannins framing a bright-edged collection of sour cherry, anise, smoke and toast. An herbal core runs through it, giving it a bright finish. 1 Note
Doesn’t show the polish and drama you expect from a Howell Mountain Cab, but it’s a pretty good wine, and there aren’t many Cabs at this price off the mountain. It’s a little vegetal. If you can get past that, it has sturdy tannins and some good black currant and cedar flavors. 1 Note
