Keith Tulloch Shiraz -2004 (WE-110129)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This is a mature example of Hunter Shiraz, showing the leathery notes that made the region famous, combined with hints of cinnamon, clove and dried cherries. It’s soft, velvety and ready to drink, whereas the 2005 appears to have greater potential ahead of it. 1 Note

Hope Estate Verdelho -2002 (WE-27409)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Medium-bodied and round, this Verdelho doesn’t give up more than some light fruit-skin flavors on the palate. The nose yields traces of butter and yellow fruit but that, too, isn’t talking much. What’s here is a start, but it wants a little more oomph. 1 Note

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This pleasant, medium-weight white from an Iberian grape shows why it has caught on among our adventurous Aussie cousins. The nose of tangerine, hay, and a mild stony note opens to a mouth full of melon, citrus and herb flavors. It sports a tangy citrus finish. 1 Note

Smells and tastes a bit like poached pear in a vanilla sauce. Rich and unctuous on the palate, with a tart, metallic finish. 1 Note

Bravo to winemaker Michael Hope, bringing Verdelho to value hunters. Offers melon, mango, even curry aromas. Though it is a little heavy on the palate, its peach and pear flavors are pleasing and refreshing. And what a bargain! 3,000 cases produced. Imported by Winesellers Ltd. 1 Note

James Estate Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot -2000 (WE-16840)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Cabernet brings deep flavors of blackcurrants and tannic structure, while Merlot contributes softer, richer notes. The result is good drinking. It’s not complex or ageworthy, but it is clean and satisfying and won’t break your budget. 1 Note

Hope Estate Verdelho -2000 (WE-13900)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

A wax, hay, smoke and even sandalwood nose opens to a sweet, grapey palate with nut accents. But very high acidity detracts from this bottle’s pleasant front end. It closes very briskly, with citrus, spice and a cutting feel. 1 Note

A classic white blend from Down Under, this lively, flavorful wine is filled with flavors of lime and juniper berry, tangerine zest, buttery smoke and oriental spices. The fruit is accompanied by very high acidity, and it’s dry. Best Buy. 1 Note

James Estate Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon -2000 (WE-16841)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Dark berries and tree stone fruits from entry to finish. It’s also very dry, with a scour of tannins. Don’t look for softness, though. Exceptionally high acidity tingles the palate, which means this puppy needs rich foods. 1 Note
