This co-op wine is a touch minty and herbal, but it has enough class and red fruit to earn props. Cherry and raspberry dominate the flavor profile, while the finish is dry and a little bit starchy. Zesty and full of pop, but lean in the middle. 1 Note

This wine is a custom cuvée made by Montsant’s trend-setting co-operative for American importer Eric Solomon. It’s a bit like a Côtes du Rhône, but with more color, dark fruit and body. And it displays some of the region’s patented terroir, meaning it has that graphite-schist quality along with peppery notes. Imported by European Cellars. 1 Note

This well-priced red from Tarragona shows a glimpse of what the Montsant region can produce. The nose is all red fruit, with a splinter of oak. The palate is chunky and easy as it deals blackberry and raspberry in spades. Chocolate and mocha on the thick finish should please the sugar mavens. 1 Note

This Freixenet-owned label from Montsant opts to use Syrah, Tempranillo and Merlot in the blend, and hence the wine is very red in color and rather weighty. The nose has some green character and earthiness, while the palate deals stewed plum and apple skin. Putting it nicely: It's not the freshest piece of fruit in the bowl. 1 Note

Sweet red-fruit and red-licorice aromas are attractive and round. The palate of peppy cranberry and plum is moderately tart, although it opens up and gets much friendlier if given time. While many wines from this section of Catalonia are big and modern, this one is more restrained and will perform well with food. 1 Note

Spicy strawberries on the nose lead straight to a full-bodied, totally balanced and healthy palate that is eager to deliver zesty raspberry and tea-like flavors. Not hard to enjoy, with peppery rosé tannins and good length. Freshness is key to this wine, and as of June 2007 it was drinking perfectly. Imported by Freixenet USA. 1 Note

Opens with hard, ripe, almost forced aromas, which settle with air. The palate is wiry, firm and a touch hot, with cola, raspberry and plum flavors that rattle around on a bed of racy acidity. Finishes rather lean and raw, but with honest flavors of Garnacha and Carignan, which comprise 90% of the blend. Imported by North American Beverage Group. 1 Note
