Henry's Drive Vignerons Chardonnay -2009 (WE-107360)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This has all the touchstones of good Chardonnay: just enough body and richness, apple, pineapple and melon fruit flavors and a crisp, citrusy finish. Solid Chardonnay for under $10. 1 Note

Henry's Drive Vignerons Shiraz -2008 (WE-107361)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Intensely fruity and fresh, with mounds of blueberries and raspberries carried by a slightly syrupy mouthfeel. Sure, Euro-drinking snobs might call it a simple fruit bomb, but it’s a darn good version of that style. Drink it over the next 2-3 years. 1 Note

Stonehaven Merlot -2000 (WE-11461)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

A good, crowd-pleasing quaffer that would go well with red-sauced pasta—a subliminal pairing, perhaps, given the tomato-y note that I picked up on the palate (though it’s bolstered by plenty of red cherry, raspberry and cedar flavors). Opens with plum, toast and caramel aromas. Best Buy. 1 Note

Angove's Cabernet Sauvignon -1999 (WE-25420)

Seems a little unbalanced, but there’s so much wood here it’s hard to discern what the discordance is, exactly. The palate and finish are all about toffee, with tart red cherry fruit underneath—the butterscotch on the nose should have tipped me off. - D.M. 1 Note

Lindemans Shiraz -2004 (WE-61246)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

As the Lindemans Bin series has slipped a bit, the Reserve tier has taken over the spot in the lineup, offering solid value. This is well-made, commercially styled Shiraz, offering all of what consumers have come to expect: jammy berry flavors framed by vanilla and chocolate. Turns fresh on the finish. Drink now. 1 Note

Henry's Drive Vignerons Red Blend -2007 (WE-92562)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Production of this wine has climbed above 100,000 cases, which makes its quality all the more remarkable. Dark chocolate and blueberry aromas lead into flavors that stay in that same vein: chocolate, coffee, tinges of black olive. It's full-bodied and rather dense on the palate, finishing with hints of espresso. Drink now. 1 Note

Lindemans Chardonnay -2001 (WE-17561)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Smells great, mixing lemon meringue pie with pears, vanilla and tropical fruit. So what happened? The midpalate is fat, the flavors are simpler and the finish a touch metallic. 1 Note

Lindemans Chardonnay -1997 (WE-1759)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Lindemans knows how to make crowd-pleasers. Lots of oak over the pineappley tropical fruit. Closes with a full, satisfying finish and tastes similar to (and as good as) many more expensive wines. Its less-expensive Bin 65 Chardonnay is also good, but the Padthaway is somewhat larger-scaled and more complex. 1 Note

Browns of Padthaway Verdelho -2002 (WE-33408)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Bright green-gold in color, with aromas as disparate as fresh green pea and chili spice. On the palate, there’s more fresh green peas (odd flavor, but pleasant) swimming in a sea of bright yellow fruit. Medium in body; finish is somewhat abrupt. 1 Note

Jacob's Creek Chardonnay -1997 (WE-2629)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A vanilla-tinged apple bouquet makes an immediate impression. Soft and seemingly sweet, accented by oak, this medium-bodied wine shows plenty of pineapple fruit. The finish is dominated by spicy oak. A formula-made wine for the American mass market-lots of oak and lots of fruit. 1 Note
