The quality of the 2009 vintage is reflected in this value-priced Toro that’s full and medicinal but also balanced and rewarding. Flavors of medicinal red-berry fruit are mixed with thicker, chocolaty notes, while the finish is bold, grabby and solid. A blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha. 1 Note

Candied on one hand but also gassy, barnyardy and less than clean and pure on the other. A basic mouthfeel is probably the high point, while flavors of underdeveloped berry fruit are more salty and leathery than anything. Fails to impress. 1 Note

Lacks freshness; pickled and leathery, with heavy, bruising tannins. Dull, pounding flavors of plum and prune are short and fierce. Rough country wine. 1 Note

Dry and piercing on the nose, and then crisp and snappy on the palate. For those opposed to overextracted, heavy reds, this could be up your alley. More modern-influenced palates will probably find it a bit lean, stripped down and tart, especially for Toro, which is known for bigger, riper wines. 1 Note

Lively, candied and medicinal, with grassy aromas along with mild animal notes. The palate is young, grabby, forceful but solid, while the flavors are bright, bold, snappy and suggest red plum and black cherry. A basic young wine that’s decent if you’re not too discerning. 1 Note

A complex bouquet of inky fruit, meat, dry-rub spices and pronounced clove and cinnamon elements segues into deep black fruit and coffee on the smooth, mid-weight palate. The often-rustic Toro character is beautifully handled, showing elegance without losing typicity or power. This structured wine closes full and dry, with a reprise of the spice notes and mouth-coating but even tannins. Drink 2004–2010+, or now, with hearty food. Best Buy. —M.M. 1 Note

Big and ripe, with marshmallow, butter and cedar on the nose. Lots of weight but not much depth, so the black-fruit flavors attack then leave as quickly as they came. A tiny bit weedy and peppery on the finish. 1 Note

Starts with dusty cherry, plum and green herb aromas before turning more smoky and saucy. Warm and solid, with flavors of plum, vanilla and spice. Well constructed and balanced, if not overly exciting. Imported by Quality Wines of Spain. 1 Note
