Hogue Syrah -2007 (WE-134721)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This single -vineyard Syrah, from an AVA known for doing especially well with that grape, has a lightly meaty varietal character with accents of earth and tobacco. The core of cherry fruit holds up through a medium-length finish. 1 Note

Righteous Red Blend -2007 (WE-106140)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Righteous is a new budget label for Sweet Valley Winery. Mostly Merlot, this smooth, fruity red wine is ready to drink. It tastes like a latter-day version of the Hearty Burgundies of old, only with better fruit, and a hint of hazelnut in the finish. 1 Note

Duck Pond Merlot -2005 (WE-115706)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Given its late release, this has been in bottle for quite awhile, and is soft and already heading into midlife. The light cherry fruit is drying out, like fruit leather, and the relatively high (14.5%) alcohol starting to take over. Drink up. 1 Note

Jones of Washington Cabernet Sauvignon -2005 (WE-85159)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

From estate-grown fruit in Washington’s Wahluke Slope AVA, this simple, spicy Cabernet Sauvignon has the overpowering vanilla and tobacco flavors that seem to come with certain types of oak products. The fruit is very basic, tart and lightly tasting like cranberries. 1 Note

Merry Cellars Sauvignon Blanc -2008 (WE-105022)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A deep yellow gold, lushly scented with orange blossom, citrus peel, ripe pear and other stone fruits, this rich, oily take on Sauvignon Blanc was done in stainless steel, but has the textural complexity of barrel fermentation. It’s a grippingly delicious bottle. 1 Note

Cor Cellars Sauvignon Blanc -2006 (WE-87021)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Clean and bright, this gold-colored wine tastes of crisp ripe apples. The finish adds lightly toasted cracker, perhaps from the fermentation in two year old barrels. It’s a very pleasant bottle of white wine for sipping. 1 Note

Desert Wind Viognier -2005 (WE-56445)

Simple peach flavors sum it up, with a flat, dead mouthfeel and a watery, dilute finish. 1 Note

Desert Wind Merlot -2004 (WE-56655)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Stemmy, green and harsh, with flavors of earth, stem and pip. The watery, dilute flavors barely suggest fruit. 1 Note

Desert Wind Chardonnay -2004 (WE-56437)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

The core of this no-oak wine is medium-ripe fruit in the apple/pineapple mode. But a bitter, harsh aftertaste throws it off course, and it never recovers. 1 Note

Desert Wind Sémillon -2006 (WE-79624)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Given a moderate 10 weeks of aging time in American oak barrels, this lightweight Sémillon acquires a bit more impact than the winery’s Bare Naked (all-stainless) bottling. The fruit is still thin and generic, but the barrel time adds some much-needed heft to the finish, and takes the edge off the phenolics. 1 Note
