Smooth on the nose, with baked-fruit aromas along with touches of forest and mineral. For a previously untried Monastrell from southern Yecla, we like the wine’s light fruit character and apple-skin tannins. Finishes with spice and cinnamon. Drinking very well now. 1 Note

At first glance it may seem a little saucy, but as it gains its legs this aged Yecla wine shows solid plum, berry and cassis aromas and flavors along with a lively, healthy palate. It’s incredibly smooth in the mouth, and definitely ready to go. Spice and chocolate are the finishing touches to what amounts to a nice, warm-climate Mourvèdre. A Europvin, Christopher Cannan selection, Imported by multiple importers, including Michael Skurnik Wines. 1 Note

Castaño Monastrell -2000 (WE-22886)

Profile Image

Monastrell, or Mourvèdre as it is more commonly known in French- and English-speaking parts of the globe, has a reputation for producing dry, tannic wines that occasionally reek of horse manure. Not so in sunny Spain, where a growing number of clean, berry-fruited offerings are turning up at bargain prices. This medium-weight Monastrell combines forward berry fruit with chocolate notes and just a hint of tree bark on the finish. 1 Note

Dry, full and with integrity, this mild-mannered rosado sings in a steady, firm voice. It doesn't go beyond the basics of semicrisp berry flavors and a touch of pepper. It's good wine made from the local Monastrell (Mourvedre), but dialed back; expect no bells or whistles. 1 Note

Get it while it’s fresh and this Monastrell-based rosé will deliver candied, red-licorice aromas in front of big, peppery berry fruit flavors. It’s pretty full-bodied and spicy, with some match stick and earth to boot. A Europvin, Christopher Cannan selection, imported by multiple importers, including Michael Skurnik Wines. 1 Note

Altos del Cuco Red Blend -2008 (WE-116999)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

A smooth wine for the price where all the dots connect. The nose has black cherry and raisin, while the palate is lush, deep and concentrated, with rewarding flavors of cherry, cassis and roasted plum. Lasting on the finish, with a licorice flavor. Very good wine for the money; Monastrell/Syrah/Tempranillo is the blend. 1 Note
