Viñas del Montsant Red Blend -2001 (WE-31774)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This co-op wine is a touch minty and herbal, but it has enough class and red fruit to earn props. Cherry and raspberry dominate the flavor profile, while the finish is dry and a little bit starchy. Zesty and full of pop, but lean in the middle. 1 Note

Bodegas Concavins Red Blend -2000 (WE-26746)

Sometimes concept exceeds the wine itself, and this may be a case in point. The blend is odd, and the fact that each grape comes from a different part of Spain is potentially more odd. As for the wine, it has a nice perfume to it, courtesy of the Rhone varieties in the mix. And while the cherry/berry fruit is forward, it’s maybe too sweet and basic in terms of length, structure and mouthfeel. Still, it’s worth a try for the experimental tasters out there. 1 Note

Arcs Carignane -2004 (WE-49023)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Violet in color, with burnt rubber, cherry and plum on the lively nose. Things go south from there, however, as the palate is too snappy and austere to support the flavors. It’s 90% Carignan and much like a tart Italian Dolcetto. Imported by Hand Picked Selections. 1 Note

Las Colinas Del Ebro Grenache Blanc -2008 (WE-100577)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Tropical and easy to like. We don’t see many white Garnachas in the U.S., but this one shows mango, melon and vanilla on the nose and the palate follows up with lychee, apple and baking spice flavors. Plump and mellow but with adequate acidity; refreshing while it’s young. Drink now. Imported by Grapes of Spain. Best Buy. 1 Note

Capçanes Red Blend -2003 (WE-48735)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This wine is a custom cuvée made by Montsant’s trend-setting co-operative for American importer Eric Solomon. It’s a bit like a Côtes du Rhône, but with more color, dark fruit and body. And it displays some of the region’s patented terroir, meaning it has that graphite-schist quality along with peppery notes. Imported by European Cellars. 1 Note

Fra Guerau Red Blend -2002 (WE-43009)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This well-priced red from Tarragona shows a glimpse of what the Montsant region can produce. The nose is all red fruit, with a splinter of oak. The palate is chunky and easy as it deals blackberry and raspberry in spades. Chocolate and mocha on the thick finish should please the sugar mavens. 1 Note

Celler La Bollidora Red Blend -2005 (WE-76475)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Our bet is that a granular, reduced, raisiny wine like this will not have broad appeal. Yet if you are interested in trying a blend of Samsó, Garnacha and Syrah it has some core qualities, namely old-school raisin and plum flavors backed by core tannins. A country-style wine if there ever was one. 1 Note

Las Colinas Del Ebro Syrah-Grenache -2008 (WE-100576)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Aromas of fresh tomato, citrus peel and red fruits are a touch austere, but the mouth and flavors are more generous. The palate is well balanced and the flavors run sweet, ripe and chewy, with berry fruit and creamy licorice notes on the finish. A blend of 60% Syrah and 40% Garnacha from Catalonia. 1 Note
