A great value white, with fresh grapefruit and crisp acidity. In a few months, the current raw edge will have softened, as the 60% Sémillon in the blend calms down. But it’s still a great summer drink. 1 Note

Pala’s Stellato is a luminous and bright Vermentino with fragrant aromas of passionfruit and citrus with a tonic, fresh feel in the mouth. Grapes are harvested about a month later than usual to give the wine added dimension and grip in the mouth. 1 Note

From vineyards just outside the Saint-Emilion appellation, this oak-aged, Merlot-dominated wine is rich and well-padded, layered with sweet blackberry fruits, and soft, ripe tannins. It is easy to drink now, fruity although it should age over 3–4 years. 1 Note

This is young, fresh, full and yeasty, with considerable richness. It shows the superlative quality of Charles Heidsieck as a Champagne producer. A dry Champagne, it is softened by richness, but the intensity and flavor and full green fruits promise great development. 1 Note

Very dark in color, this Picolit from the celebrated Rosazzo cru offers thick and syrupy tones of almond nut, dried apricot, honey and marzipan. It’s a ripe and very sweet wine with thick sugary layers in the mouth. The hot 2003 vintage has shaped a mature expression of Picolit. 1 Note

With good concentration, genuine tasting ripe fruits, this is an impressively rich wine for simple Beaujolais. It has red berry fruits, lined with tannins and a great final burst of freshness. 1 Note

This is unique not only because it’s the first such blend to be produced in South Africa (Syrah-Mourvèdre-Grenache) but also because of its exotic palate of dark chocolate, plum and spice flavors. The wine is fun and vibrant but also elegant and complex enough to stand on its own in the glass, and it still exhibits the measured restraint for which the French, and many South African wines, are known.
