A Wine

Tukulu Chenin Blanc -2003 (WE-32843)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Dry and very refreshing, a fine example of the potential of Cape Chenin Blanc. Slate and mineral notes over fine dry white peach and citrus fruit make for a tasty, refreshing wine. 1 Note

Neil Ellis Sauvignon Blanc -2004 (WE-40579)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Light on its feet yet with surprising substance, another tasty, winning white from Neil Ellis. Early-on his wines helped introduce South Africa as a serious producing region to unacquainted American enthusiasts. Herb, grass, papaya, and mineral notes are juxtaposed handsomely here. The feel is taut and angular, the finish long, and a screwtop cap again puts him in the forward guard. 1 Note

Starts with soft ripe melon, pear and tropical fruit notes. Turns crisper and more typically Sauvignon Blanc on the tongue, where satisfying grapefruit flavors show classic herb and pepper accents and a fairly full yet crisp feel. 1 Note

The thin mouthfeel is rather smooth, with clean acidity and light flavors of citrus, toast and herbs, finishing with a lemony tang. The nose is where all the action is, with honey, lush tropical fruit, apricots, figs, herbed butter and so much more. 1 Note

Neil Ellis Sauvignon Blanc -2000 (WE-8111)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Fat-bodied but tangy, with grapefruit and lime aromas and flavors. A touch of figginess and a tangerine note on the palate balance the flavor profile. There’s lovely texture—quite full for Sauvignon Blanc—and a long ripe finish. 1 Note

Powerful and steely best describe the nose, and the palate is equally racy and intense. But sheer zest doesn’t make up for the fact the fruit is lean and distant. No matter how hard you dig, there’s only some lean green apple prior to a short, clean, tight finish. —M.S. 1 Note

Neil Ellis Sauvignon Blanc -2009 (WE-126131)

The prickly mouth and forward acidity makes this a live-wire choice that would be a great companion to a rich chicken dish or cream of asparagus soup. Fresh- cut grass, soft chive and watermelon rind all occasionally shine through the citrus-dominant nose and mouth. Drink now. 1 Note

Darling Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon -1999 (WE-24637)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

The perks of this wine are the cherry fruit aroma, the tannins, and the caramel at the backend of the finish. The aromas of asparagus and radicchio are awkward company to the tomato and toast flavors. 1 Note

Onyx Shiraz -2000 (WE-24636)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This wine, produced by Darling Cellars, features a meaty nose of black cherry and cinnamon toast that leads to red plum and white pepper on the palate. Tannins are there, but the acidity isn’t. The cinnamon finish is accompanied by bitter herbs. —K.F. 1 Note
