Doña Paula Merlot -2004 (WE-64788)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

This wine kicks off in spicy, almost saucy fashion, but airing reveals plum and cherry aromas and flavors that are backed by moderately spiky tannins and some chocolate flavor. Hits the spot with its forward attitude and healthy fruit, but lacks the complexity of a higher-tier red. 1 Note

A blend of Corvina brought over from Italy and Argentine Malbec done in the Venetian ripasso style. The nose is a bit soupy and earthy as it seeks fresh fruit, while the palate runs rich and syrupy, with roasted berry and black plum flavors. Soft on the finish, with a quick fade. Best if you like meaty, sweet reds. 1 Note

Aromas of leather and root beer are rustic and inviting. Flavors of berries, pepper and red beets create a sweet palate, while firm tannins push the finish. A touch lactic and creamy, but good overall. 1 Note

Sweet, candied aromas kick it off, and underneath there’s some blueberry and cotton candy. The mouth pops with cherry and raspberry flavors and some buttery oak. The finish is also kind of oaky and, all things considered, it’s a bit over the top. —M.S. 1 Note

This Argentine 100% Cab Sauv is a great buy. Med to full bodied, great deep darkberry with a wonderful dry grip on the smoothfinish. Now I will have to look for the 2009 to see if it holds up too.

Trumpeter Merlot -2004 (WE-52181)

Although it kicks off on the stewy, baked side of the fence, airing reveals good fruit and ample wood; indeed, there’s brandied cherry, vanilla and chocolate to ponder. Long on the finish, albeit a finish that’s one-note simple. A little stark in terms of feel. 1 Note

Lightweight in its approach, but still sturdy. The bouquet offers melon, tropical notes and white flowers, while the palate deals mostly cantaloupe and banana. A modestly oaked wine without a ton of stuffing. Good for basic sipping. Imported by Billington Imports. 1 Note

This Tupungato Merlot has a deep color and chewy, chocolaty fruit that has enough berry fruit to make the grade. With mild earthy touches and some spice notes, it’s enjoyable, especially given the price. 1 Note

The must for this wine spends up to two weeks refrigerated on its gross lees prior to fermentation, according to winemaker Gandolini. The result is a grapefruity, slightly grassy wine that’s rounder and softer on the midpalate, filling in with flavors of melon and fig. Tart on the finish. 1 Note
