It’s something to get a Yarra-appellation wine at a price like this. Smells quite nice, with hints of orange peel and burnt sugar dressing up sturdy red fruit. On the palate, tealike tannins put the wine’s cherry fruit in the back seat. Lean and almost tart, with tea and lemon notes on the finish. 1 Note

Finding decent Pinot Noir at $10 is a challenge, but this wine delivers varietally correct aromas of smoke, beet and cherry, then backs them up with flavors of cola and root veggies. It’s medium-bodied, finishing with a tart, almost citrusy edge. Drink now. 1 Note

For once, “extra dry” on a label means just that: This isn’t a sweet, or particularly fruit-forward, pink wine. It has the crispness of a dry white, but the versatility and flavor of a bigger red—just what you want to drink cold and outdoors, to wash down a bucket of fried chicken. Effectively the third-tier effort from this producer (there’s a regular bottling and a reserve in vintages that warrant them), the 2008 Little Yering is nonetheless a respectable Pinot Noir. It’s undeniably herbal in tone, but matches those elements with modest cherry fruit, a slightly chunky texture and a tangy finish. Drink now. 1 Note
