Some Banyuls can be pruny, but this version from the Rhône-based firm of Chapoutier is remarkably fresh. The wine’s sweet, plummy fruit features herbal touches on the nose, but also enough cocoa-like flavors to pair with chocolate and a softly dusty texture to the finish. 1 Note

The bouquet is full of summer bramble, earth and cherries. The mouthfeel is textured and hearty; a tasty, well-made wine that’s a splendid example of affordable Syrah, Grenache and Carignan. 1 Note

From the base of the Pyrenées comes this blend of Merlot, Syrah and Grenache. The nose offers fresh ripe berries and a hint of citrus rind, but the palate is more dilute and scattered. It also carries a slight pickled taste, probably courtesy of the barrels it was aged in. The texture is good and the tannins are tame, but all in all it just doesn’t rise to the occasion. —M.S. 1 Note

Domaine Cazes Muscat-Viognier -2005 (WE-64718)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

The name may be eccentric (it refers to a cannon that was found in the region), but the wine is just pure pleasure. It is perfumed but dry. Despite its aromatics it’s a fine food pairing for Chinese food and has enough acidity to keep it poised and light. 1 Note

Lively and powerful with robust aromas and flavors of citrus, red currant and cantaloupe. Minor herbal notes of crushed carnation petals fight their way through to add some complexity to the finish. 1 Note

Take a sniff and you’ll get blueberry and graham crackers along with mineral. The mouth is pure and expressive, with size and power. The flavor profile is mostly black plums with supporting oak, and the finish is dry and rewarding. Although the wine leans a bit toward the syrupy and heavy side, it holds the line of balance just enough to qualify as a sure winner. Best Buy. —M.S. 1 Note
