Nine Stones Shiraz -2005 (WE-67467)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Here’s a solid effort from a little-known growing region near Canberra. It’s peppery and herbal, showing its relatively cool-climate origins, but also shows enough mixed berry fruit for balance. Savory spice notes on the finish impart complexity. Drink now–2012. 1 Note

Nine Stones Shiraz -2007 (WE-99272)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A dusty, savory style of Shiraz, with elements of smoke, earth, black olive and cola all rolled into a medium-bodied Shiraz with some drying tannins. Drink it over the next couple of years with rare beef or lamb. 1 Note

Nine Stones Shiraz -2008 (WE-106268)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Starts off with some Rhône-like aromas of smoke, cracked pepper, blueberries and a touch of meatiness, then delivers vibrant fruit and spice on the palate. With its medium body and tart finish, this could almost pass for Crozes-Hermitage. Like most C-H, enjoy it on the young side for its fresh, juicy fruit. 1 Note

A crisp, light-bodied Pinot Noir that shows decent varietal character but only modest intensity, Hungerford Hill’s 2005 bottling features hints of chocolate and cedar layered over delicate cherry fruit. 1 Note

Clonakilla Shiraz -2003 (WE-46022)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Though the aromas and flavors are really nice, this wine’s flat, woody feel keeps it from being as excellent as it could be. It starts off with black olive and eucalyptus on the nose, and brings black cherry, plum, herb and eucalyptus on the palate. Good acids; an even, balanced wine. Imported by USA Wine West. 1 Note

The notes here are somewhat discordant—like two parts of an orchestra a touch out of sync. First up are some lovely aromas of smoke, grilled nuts, pear and citrus. Then there’s a bit of overly sweet fruit on the palate, and a tart, chalky finish that brings things to a close. It’s not clear where this is headed, although it does give some pleasure now. 1 Note

Clonakilla Shiraz -2006 (WE-107466)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

It’s not Clonakilla’s top-of-the-line Shiraz-Viognier, but it’s still darn good, and in its savory notes of tapenade, leather and peppery spice, it provides a nice alternative to common fruit-driven Shiraz. On the palate, this is beefy and potent, with some supporting blueberry fruit, a creamy texture and a long, spicy finish. Drink now-2020. 1 Note

Hungerford Hill Chardonnay -2009 (WE-126647)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Tumbarumba is an up-and-coming cool-climate viticulture region, and this Chardonnay is a fine example of why the area is considered to have promise. The wine is medium in body and nicely plump in the mouth, and displays a harmonious blend of apple, pear, citrus and butter flavors and an elegant, lingering finish. Drink now and over the next 1–2 years. 1 Note

Hungerford Hill Pinot Noir -2009 (WE-126651)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

On the oaky side, with notes of fresh cedar and vanilla that seem to dominate the underlying fruit. Still, it’s a reasonably attractive red with soft tannins. 1 Note
