St. Cosme Syrah -2002

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Chateau de St. Cosme comes through again. Consistently one of my favorite Rhone producers, Cosme's 2002 Cote-Rotie was elegant and well-structured. Good acid, soft tannins, balanced red fruit. One more reason my wine rack usually has bottles from Cosme on hand (Gigondas, CDR, Cote Rotie, etc.) Wish I hade more of this now. 1 Note

Carignan 52%, Grenache Noir 25%, Mouvedre 18%, Syrah 5%, Medium bodied with intense and complex aromas of cassis, blackberry and licorice. Silky tannins give excellent structure to ripe black fruit, raspberry and cherry flavors. 1 Note

Fermented in stainless steel, which definitely brings out the dark raspberries, plums, currant and chocolate. It has such an awesome fruity aroma with some herbs; maybe some floral accents. Very complex, the price is unreal, but Rhones are unsung. 2007 is supposed to be a bad year for Bordeaux, but not for Rhone blends, save your money and try this succulent wine this year. $12-$15 91 pts - Wine Spectator 90 pts - Wine Advocate 1 Note

This Southern Rhone is mostly a Grenache blend and earned 88 points from Wine Spectator. Tannic and full-bodied, as a Rhone should be, it has aromas of cassis, freshly cut wood, raspberry and figs. Their is a definite earthiness, which I love, to the flavor. It's a great steak wine and a solid value at $10.

Pierre Amadieu Rhône Blend Red -2007

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Absolutely brilliant Rhone. 75% Grenache, 25% Syrah, this surprisingly inexpensive blend earned 92 points from Wine and Spirits and is just as good as any Chateuaneuf du Pape. It does, however, need at least 45 minutes in a decanter, but afterward the tannins soften quite a bit and you are able to savor the smooth, dark fruit. It is complex and structured. It has great balance as nothing stood out more than the other. The back label suggests to enjoy this wine with poultry or veal. It's too bold for that. We had it with steak and it was a great match. I never say this usually, but this would be one for the cellars... perhaps five years, but no more than seven in my amateur opinion. $15

Cuvee du President Rhone Blend -2006

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

La Cuvee du President is an excellent Rhone with a beautiful, deep purple in natural light, which is easy on the eyes while pouring into a decanter. Aromas of dark, rich blackberries, and a bouquet of violets with some mineral and flavors of cloves, black pepper, and some robust coffee with a black cherry finish. This wine has excellent structure, firm tannins, and stood up well to the strong mesquite chicken, and later with smoked Gouda and rosemary garlic crackers.
