Austere and lean, with less spice than I typically enjoy in a syrah. 2 Notes

Amazing blend on tap at Magnolia Brewery. Served by the glass, quartino or half liter at the brewery's cask room temperature. Delicious and fresh, even after being in the cask for a few weeks. 1 Note

A dark, inky wine with the explosive punch of a big Syrah. Dark berries (blackberry, currant) on the nose leads to a fruity palate. Well developed tannins round off the finish. 1 Note

Excellent. Reminiscent of French Syrah. Interesting hint of flowers in the aroma, mild tannins, but it has the distinct peppery and spicy flavors of a Syrah. One of the best boutique wineries in Virginia. $24 1 Note

Les Piliers Syrah -2006

Southern Rhone: the birthplace of Syrah. Dark ruby color. Not much nose to speak of. You really have to swirl intensely to get any kind of scent. The mouth delivers dark fruit, hints of pepper, spices, and perhaps a bit of vanilla on the finish if your paying close attention. They consider themselves "powerful, yet elegant." If you're used to Washington or California Syrah, you will be disappointed. It was good with steak, but I wouldn't drink this for the pure enjoyment and you can't beat the price: $15. Go for the Rhone blends to the north. 1 Note

This particular wine possessed great dark fruit in the nose with some black peppercorn. The complexity of the flavor was exhibited by currant, strawberries, cherries, cinnamon and oak. It had a nice, full-bodied feel with good acidity, firm tannins, and a lingering after-taste that persisted for well over a minute. Give this wine a good hour, or aerate in one of those $40 aerators and then give it another 20-30 minutes. This pairs well with steak and other hardy meats. 90 points by Wine Spectator. Highly recommended for quality and price; $14
