Angaro Cabernet Sauvignon-Tempranillo -2001 (WE-20162)

The rustic nose is leathery and a bit sulfuric, but it isn’t unappealing. Nor is the bold cherry and cassis palate, which is touched up by some coffee. The finish is loaded with berry fruit. The only fault here is its depth: Everything positive is front and forward and there’s nothing underneath. The blend is 55% Cabernet and 45% Tempranillo. 1 Note

The nose is potent if not obviously pretty; there’s way too much barrel char and sulfur. Dull strawberry flavors mix with some cherry on the palate, while the finish is light and a tad weedy. —M.S. 1 Note

Surely one of the better bargains this year, and with 60,000 cases produced, it can’t be that hard to find. This Cab-Tempranillo is full and balanced in the mouth, with red fruit and a healthy dose of oak. Its tannins are most perceptible on the finish; letting it rest a year or two may coax more than mocha and light, jammy fruit out of the nose. Best Buy. —D.M. 1 Note

This is a medium-weight red. Ruby in color with raspberry and blackberry aromas, it’s accented by tar and tobacco notes. There is a slight herbal—some might say weedy—quality, but it has good balance, and it finishes clean and dry. 1 Note

A tasty quaff from the well-known Sherry and Port house with good color, plummy aromas and a soft yet full mouth feel. The ripe cherry and cocoa flavors have instant appeal, as does the velvety texture. Though not deep, this is enjoyable. Closes easy, with cocoa and mild spice notes. Drink now–2004. 1 Note

Rusty and flat, with aromas of lettuce, celery and other dry greens. Some cherry and plum carry the palate, while the finish is dry and simple. Starchy in terms of feel. 1 Note

A tasty blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo that spent 12 months in French oak, it shows cherry fruit with a hint of herbaceousness in a supple, medium-bodied wine. Think generous cru bourgeois. 1 Note

“Oaky” is the first word that comes to mind, as the bouquet is full of cinnamon and cedar shavings. The mouth deals clove and vanilla notes along with meaty, somewhat dense fruit that doesn’t really rise above first impressions. Imported by Jorge Ordoñez/Fine Estates from Spain. 1 Note

Spicy and herbal, but with ample fruit backing that up it comes across as a nice everyday red wine. The palate is a bit earthy and rustic, with a touch of green. But for the most part it’s a healthy, mildly tannic red that will wash down just about any food put in its path. The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo. Imported by Victoire Imports. 1 Note
