There are good 83s and bad ones, and honestly this is a perfectly good one. It's not too deep on fruit and it's a touch low-acid and pudgy, but the apple, papaya and peach flavors are o.k. and the finish is clean and crisp. 1 Note

Easy to dismiss at first because it’s a bit acrid and raspy on the nose. But patience will be rewarded; the palate provides burnt apple and toast flavors, while the finish is alive with herb, pepper and smoke notes. Not a familiar style, so it’s hard to grasp. Macabeo, a grape usually used in the cava blend, stands alone here. And it struggles. The palate on this wine is of lime and underripe peach, while the compact finish is dry and edgy. Sparse in terms of flavor, but not bad when it comes to freshness and feel. 1 Note

Light pear aromas, mild citrus flavors and some lasting acidity is all this over-the-hill wine has left. It’s maderized, browning and flattens out badly on the finish. On life support and heading downhill. 1 Note

Punch bowl aromas of pineapple, passion fruit and citrus are more tropical and inviting than you’re average Macabeo. The palate is lush and fresh, with sweet green fruit flavors and then a wash of cutting acidity. Simple and fruity bargain white wine. 1 Note

Heavy and mealy on the nose, with stalky white-fruit aromas. The palate is weighty and sticky, with a cloying feel and sweet, baked flavors of apple and honey. Then it turns distinctly bitter and pithy on the finish. Generally speaking, Calatayud is not white wine country. 1 Note

Tanning in color, with stalky, semimealy aromas that lack zap and citric crispness. The body is heavy, although there’s adequate acidity, while the flavors lean toward mealy citrus and ripe melon. Pithy and bitter on the finish, like almond skins. 1 Note

This wine is made entirely from Macabeo, one of the three grapes that comprise cava. The wine is heavy and fairly dull in the nose; there isn’t much fruit and only a distant scent of nut oil. The flavors are sharp and lemony, and the finish is equally tangy. Cheerful is not this wine’s middle name. 1 Note
