Pegasus Bay Merlot-Malbec -2001 (WE-55103)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Peg Bay's Maestro is only bottled in the best vintages, the last being 1998, a wine that continues to age beautifully. In 2001, it's predominantly (75%) Merlot, with the remainder mainly Malbec (15%), with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Combines toasty new oak with cassis and dried spices in a medium-weight wine, then adds an explosive, tobacco-laden finish. Not available in the US. 1 Note

Falling Star Merlot-Malbec -2004 (WE-41709)

For a five-spot you get syrupy but fairly deep red fruit in the cherry, raspberry and plum category. The mouthfeeel is more than acceptable, while the overriding jammy sweetness could muster mass appeal. 1 Note

Falling Star Merlot-Malbec -2001 (WE-19499)

Profile Image

Very light in color and strange in the nose; the cherry aromas are candied and downright strange. The palate is of little consequence and the finish is lean and tastes of cherry infused tea. –M.S. 1 Note

Finca Sophenia Merlot-Malbec -2004 (WE-45860)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Bright and fruity, but low in acid and a touch funky, especially as it warms and opens. While chilled it'll show good raspberry and cherry aromas and flavors, but warming reveals cough syrup and some horsehide. Made from Malbec and Merlot. 1 Note

Mills Reef Merlot-Malbec -2004 (WE-62328)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A chunky, soft wine with a strong wood influence, very much in keeping with the winery’s style. This 51% Merlot-49% Malbec blend features a smoky, cedary, vanilla-laden bouquet, dark fruit flavors, supple tannins and a smooth finish. 1 Note

Mills Reef Merlot-Malbec -2009 (WE-126776)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

At nearly 80% Merlot and the remainder Malbec, this is a medium-bodied red possessed of bright, vibrant cassis fruit with chocolate and herb overtones. It finishes firm without being hard or tough, so it may be consumed now and over the next 5–7 years. 1 Note

Trapiche Merlot-Malbec -2003 (WE-54202)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Aggressive and oaky, with lactic aromas as well as heavy burnt-toast notes. This is Trapiche’s flagship blend of Cabernet and Malbec, and every year it seems less than up to its price. The ’03 version is tart in the middle, with a ton of tannin and raw wood. Maybe it’ll round into form with time in the cellar. But maybe not. Imported by Frederick Wildman & Sons, Ltd. 1 Note

Trapiche Merlot-Malbec -2006 (WE-97442)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This is a lively, slightly jagged wine with full ripeness and lots of berry, spice and zip. The palate hits hard with cherry, raspberry and pepper flavors, and there’s a bit of rasp and burn to the finish. Should get a little softer with more bottle age. 1 Note

Trapiche Merlot-Malbec -2005 (WE-83977)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Trapiche’s signature blend of Malbec and Merlot is at its best with this bottling. The nose is smooth and deep as night, with a mix of black plum and light lemony aromas. The palate stands up as it accentuates plum and blackberry, while oak in the form of mocha and spice shows itself on the finish. A lively blend that should drink well through 2010 and beyond. 1 Note

Iscay means “two” in a native Incan language, and it represents the wine’s composition of 50% Malbec and 50% Merlot. The wine is intense and inky, with aromas of mocha, black fruit, asphalt and rubber. The palate is juicy and lively, with full but not too aggressive tannins. Very nice but not as interesting as the single-vineyard Malbecs. 1 Note
