Bodegas La Purísima Monastrell -2003 (WE-72418)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Smooth on the nose, with baked-fruit aromas along with touches of forest and mineral. For a previously untried Monastrell from southern Yecla, we like the wine’s light fruit character and apple-skin tannins. Finishes with spice and cinnamon. Drinking very well now. 1 Note

Bodegas Luzon Monastrell -2005 (WE-65637)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A young Monastrell with no measurable oak, which means there’s only grapy, juvenile aromas of berries preceding juicy black plum and berry flavors. Very ripe and better balanced than previous vintages; look for notes of chocolate and leather in between the dominant fruit character. 1 Note

Smells like fruit bubble gum and even though it settles down with time in the glass, it really doesn’t offer much besides jumpy fruit. Devoid of complexity despite being clean and juicy. Imported by Jorge Ordoñez/Fine Estates from Spain. 1 Note

Wrongo Dongo Monastrell -2007 (WE-90871)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Silly name but pretty good wine. A tidal wave of cherry/berry aromas is authentic, natural, youthful and floral. The palate is just as bright and bouncy, with red fruit running away with things. A touch of mineral and chocolate at the end gives it some darkness to match the vibrancy. 1 Note

Wrongo Dongo Monastrell -2008 (WE-106640)

Perfectly drinkable Monastrell year after year despite the silly name. Plum and roasted berry aromas and flavors are sweet, ripe, clean and on the generic side of the fence. A little rugged and hot at 15%, but lusty and good for the price. 1 Note

A country-style red made from Monastrell. The nose is chubby and deeply fruity, while the plump palate offers a wave or two of blackberry and currant flavors. Flush and full, and totally uncomplicated. 1 Note

Basic and a little sweet and confected, but consider the price and you should be smiling. There’s some bramble and pepper to the nose, but mostly it’s just ripe and full of blackberry and black plum character. Candied and almost cloying, but remains flush and happy. Good in the midlevel category. 1 Note

Bodegas Tarima Monastrell -2009 (WE-115471)

Rubbery and roasted, but not too much so. Otherwise one should look for medicinal berry aromas followed by flavors of baked plum, prune and black pepper. The finish is dense, a touch flat, and chocolaty; overall this is a chunky, sweet performer. 1 Note

Bulky and fruity, with a medicinal note to the ripe nose. From a hot vintage, so it is jammy and sweet, with strawberry and chocolate flavors. Finishes creamy and thick, with heavy doses of vanilla. Also shows a mild cooked character. 1 Note

Finca El Paso Monastrell -2007 (WE-93524)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A little more sharp and lean smelling than you’d expect from warm-climate Jumilla, with firm raspberry and plum flavors. A forward-style wine that’s simple, zesty and does not fall apart on the finish. Good for everyday consumption. 1 Note
