Here is a dense and intense Primitivo with exotic spice, clove, ground cinnamon and nutmeg backed by plump red fruit and toasted notes. A very nice ensemble with roundness and harmony and a rock-solid build. Cellar the wine for at least two more years. 1 Note

This darkly colored Primitivo opens with sweet notes of Christmas spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, blackberry jam and plum cake. The wine is sticky and chewy on the close with sweet, succulent tannins. 1 Note

Here’s a jammy, syrupy and dense expression of Primitivo with chewy layers of black cherry, leather, spice and tobacco. There’s a sweet, overripe note in there as well that recalls strawberry comfiture and the wine is dense and chewy on the close. 1 Note

This is a meaty, chewy, succulent and slightly sweet rendition of Primitivo from sunny southern Italy that is redolent of jammy fruit and blackberry pie. Those ripe tones continue to the mouth where the wine feels soft, plush and smooth. 1 Note

Here is an intense and powerful Primitivo with a burnt note of popcorn and toasted nut backed by maple syrup and cooked plums. The density is not too heavy, which helps render this wine more approachable and food friendly. 1 Note

Made with grapes from 50-year-old vines, this has a lush veneer of caramelized cherry lavished on top. Aromas include blueberry, leather and exotic spice; it’s hard to imagine what to pair this sweet wine with other than aged cheeses. 1 Note

Definitely not Zinfandel-like, despite its Primitivo origins; a rather nondescript wine, as a matter of fact. Light cherry overtones are noted on the nose and palate. The tannins are mouth-drying. This is certainly not a good example of how far Puglia has come with this grape. However, it would work fine with a slice or two of pizza. 1 Note

A slight funk, reminiscent of rhubarb or sauerkraut, detracts from the otherwise pleasant red berry aromas. A creamy mouthfeel complements milk chocolate and lactic flavors that turn tart and thin on the finish. 1 Note

Loads of toasted notes, vanilla, cherry, leather, almond and melted butter. There’s also an earthy tone to the nose, followed by a creamy consistency in the mouth. The wine would make an excellent match to almost any pasta dish. 1 Note
