This red, from the Saint-Tropez area, is a blend of 40% Grenache, 40% Syrah and 20% Mourvèdre. It yields wonderfully complex notes of garrigue and dried spices, but also warm black cherry fruit and supple tannins. Round in the mouth and easy to drink even at this young age. 1 Note

This cuvée stands in firm contrast to the winery’s more feminine-styled Dame de Piegros, showing the meaty, gamy side of Syrah, powerful spice and blackberry fruit and lashings of vanilla. Ends with firm acids and gripping tannins. This needs 3–4 years of cellaring. 1 Note

Domaine Lafond Rhône-style Red Blend -2000 (WE-106950)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Close to mature, the 2000 La Ferme Romaine features smoky, bacony aromas alongside hints of leather and black cherries. Has a slightly coarse, open-knit texture and tannins that may not ever fully resolve, but would offer a fine counterpoint to rich braises or stews. 1 Note

Domaine de Verquiere Rhône-style Red Blend -2004 (WE-62076)

Broad and mouthfilling, this darkly fruited Vacqueyras is also thickly tannic, requiring rare beef at this stage of its evolution to tame the tannins. The coffee, baking spice and blackberry aromas and flavors are pleasing, so either bring on the roast or cellar it for 3–4 years. 1 Note

Louis Bernard Rhône-style Red Blend -2004 (WE-62756)

Has some sturdy plum and prune fruit accented by coffee and spice, but comes across a bit low in acidity and with some dryng tannins that may not completely resolve, even if given time. Drink now. 1 Note

Very rich for a Côtes-du-Rhône, even one of villages status, with a creamy, almost liquorous mouthfeel. The heat of the vintage has made for dried fruit notes of date and prune, but there’s enough enlivening spice so that the wine avoids heaviness. A bit like liquid fruitcake. Drink now. 1 Note

Maybe a touch lighter than this domaine’s Vieilles Vignes bottling, but very similar in quality, with fruit that tends toward cranberries and cherries rather than prunes or dates. Livelier and still compelling, with subtle spice notes from start to finish. The blend is 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 20% Mourvèdre. 1 Note

A supple, elegant wine--the qualities that are alleged to be typical of Beaumes-de-Venise wines. It also has plenty of bright, crunchy cherry fruit and a hefty dash of peppery spice. Nicely balanced, and ready to drink now but capable of a few years' of development. 1 Note

Grenache and 25% Syrah, this is a wonderfully supple wine—so easy to drink—yet with just enough lightly dusty tannins on the finish to give it structure. Raspberry and peach fruit is accented by hints of leather and clove. Drink now and over the next few years. 1 Note

From a domaine famous for its sweet Muscat, this is a rather dark, dusty expression of Beaumes-de-Venise rouge. Cocoa and coffee notes frame modest fruit. Drink now. 1 Note
