Tannat, with its high tannins, seems to lend itself as well to sweet fortified wines as do the Douro grapes of Port country. This is sweet, but firmly, solidly tannic, packed with wild berries and an edge of spice. 1 Note

This wine from 100% Tannat, Uruguay’s flagship grape variety, offers up an intriguing bouquet of salumeria. It’s honest and giving, with convincing flavors of roasted meat and blackberries set against a backdrop of vanilla. Clean and modern in style. Very promising. 1 Note

Producers, aware of the Tannat grape’s reputation for tough tannins, have set about reinventing Madiran, emphasizing fruit rather than structure. Here is a good example, with its softness, juicy red fruits and almost Beaujolais-like freshness. 1 Note

Candied and sweet on the nose, but sour on the tongue. Simply put, it’s astringent, lean and acidic, all common traits of this hard-to-master grape more frequently found in Uruguay. 1 Note
