A double maceration process (once before, once after fermentation) gives added concentration and silkiness to this bright, cherry-flavored wine. It has the forward, friendly fruit of a good young Bourgogne, with just the right amount of tannin and acid to hold everything together. Not a blockbuster, but an excellent everyday food wine. 1 Note

Good varietal character, with smoky cherry, orange peel, cherry and vanilla. Supple, creamy and sweet with vanilla and spice. Pleasant, with nice complexity. 1 Note

Argyle’s Reserve shows less oak than the Nuthouse and Spirithouse bottlings, with more compact and vivid fruit. Nice flavors of stone fruits, grapes and citrus, well integrated and full through the mid-palate. It rounds into a very pretty finish, fruit forward, balanced and true. 1 Note

An early release is often good for Oregon Pinot, bringing out the young varietal flavors with bracing freshness. Here an extended maceration, both before and after fermentation, gives it a nice mix of cherry/grapy fruit with a good tannic structure. Comes on like a cru Beaujolais, with surprising weight and length for such a young wine. 1 Note

Argyle vintage dates its brut, a mark of extra care and quality. As with the ’99 when it was first released, this is still tight and showing crisp green apple flavors, but it opens gently into a smooth, yeasty wine with hints of toast. The blend is 55% Chardonnay and 45% Pinot Noir. 1 Note

As far as winemaking goes, this gets the full treatment: French oak, sur lie aging, attention from an excellent winemaker (Rollin Soles), etc. But none of this could turn around the effects of a weak vintage. The bottom line: This Chardonnay doesn’t have the fruit to stand up to the oak; it’s mostly wood and some light lemony notes that you taste. 1 Note

This is as boldly fruity as rosé can be; it is packed with young pinot flavors of cherry candy. Youthful, big and fruity, it is immediately engaging, quite quaffable, but ultimately much less complex and interesting than the rest of the Argyle lineup. 1 Note
