Cadence Bordeaux-style Red Blend -2003 (WE-51667)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

About 300 cases were made of this satiny red blend, roughly two-thirds Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon. A pretty, softly fruity nose is accented with barrel scents of toasted coconut. It has all the charm and vibrant fruit flavor of a young wine, nicely wrapped in new oak. 1 Note

This mostly Cabernet Franc red blend is drinking beautifully right now, but it’s got some real stuffing. The fruit is polished, plummy, and evolved; there are nice toasty hightlights and even hints of tobacco if you look. It drinks like a much pricier wine. 1 Note

Cadence Red Blend -2006 (WE-85098)

Coda, the second label of Cadence, moves in a completely different direction in 2006, when the estate vineyard came into production. Coda is now a blend of estate (Cara Mia), Tapteil and Ciel du Cheval, all top Red Mountain sites. The Petit Verdot, a third of the blend, is all from Cara Mia; the rest of the blend is divided among Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab Franc and Merlot. This 2006 Coda is bursting with mixed red and black fruits, polished, spicy and detailed. The tannins are smooth, and the fruit is powerful and forward. 1 Note

Cadence Bordeaux-style Red Blend -2008 (WE-125249)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Tapteil, Ciel and Cara Mia vineyard fruit, a blend of 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 28% Cab Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. Young and tight, with the characteristic Cadence chalk and stone undertone. The fruit is pretty strawberry, with a peppery herbal streak, good length and fine balance. 1 Note

Cadence Red Blend -2001 (WE-34017)

A whiff of sweaty saddle in the nose, followed by this exemplary vineyard’s beguiling mix of stone, mineral, earth and tart blueberry flavors. The complexity and elegance come through despite the huge (14.9%) alcohol; but perhaps this is pushing the ripeness just a bit too far. The distinctive character of the vineyard is close to being masked. 1 Note

The penetrating bouquet of raspberries, blackberries and bitter chocolate, and a purple inkiness that seems to stain the glass, suggest the power in this wine, a Merlot-dominated Bordeaux blend. It reminds me of some of the very best Ridge wines; intensely sappy fruit, powerful and alcoholic, dominates, while the presence of oak is minimized. 1 Note

Cadence Red Blend -2003 (WE-54605)

Dark and roasted, with espresso, toffee and tar flavors right up front, this thickly tannic wine features big, plummy fruit with the concentration of strawberry preserves. A bit of heat, and the massive tannins that are typical from Klipsun vineyard fruit. 1 Note

Cadence Red Blend -2002 (WE-51633)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Released in November, has opened up nicely since. Breathes well in the glass; a hefty, aromatic, plummy wine showing nicely integrated soft cherry and tobacco notes, along with seductive streaks of citrus, clove and graphite. It’s smooth but not at all flabby, displaying the hints of minerality that mark Ciel fruit. 1 Note

Cadence Red Blend -2002 (WE-51680)

Chunky, solid effort showing aggressive whiskey barrel scents and some heat in the finish. Young, tannic and chewy. At this point the Ciel shows more elegance and integration, but the Tapteil is distinctive and ageworthy. 1 Note

The “home” vineyard for this exciting young winery, this Bordeaux blend shows intense dusty, spicy black fruits and some chalky, mineral tannins. Good grip, but it’s still very tight and unyielding. The sense is that it will unwrap some layers over time; right now it feels a bit awkward and rough. 1 Note
