A Wine

Castle Rock Syrah -2003 (WE-42778)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This cool-climate Syrah brims with bright white pepper, cassis and coffee flavors, while the tannins are rich, ripe and fine. It’s a bone-dry wine with plenty of style and complexity. 1 Note

Here’s a drinkable everyday sort of Zin, offering fresh fruity flavors and rich tannins. Finishes with enough acidity to cut through pizza or greasy BBQ. 1 Note

Castle Rock Sauvignon Blanc -2003 (WE-36904)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

I tasted this wine with a range of other Sauvignon Blancs, all of which cost far more, and it had nothing to be ashamed of. Shows a nice balance of crisp acids and slight oak with well-ripened flavors of citrus fruits, melons and figs. A splash of Sémillon adds a nutty complexity. At this price, from this appellation, it’s a steal. Shouldn’t be too hard to find, with 5,600 cases produced. 1 Note

Castle Rock Merlot -2004 (WE-68484)

Smells so nice and pretty, just like a young Merlot should, but that white sugary edge to the cherries really detracts. 1 Note

Castle Rock Cabernet Sauvignon -2000 (WE-22500)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A bouquet of sweet plum, black cherry, oak and bread flour is a preview of what comes later in the mouth. Medium-bodied, it closes with more of the same (though the fruit’s a little blacker, and there’s a cashew-nuttiness to boot). Rather tasty, if not a wine whose changing flavors and nuances are things to ponder. Best Buy. —D.M. 1 Note

Castle Rock Syrah -1998 (WE-9776)

At first it seems so easygoing: lots of fruit; a rich, dark, chocolaty wine. But underneath there is a fair amount of structure that will carry it along for a couple of years. I love this style of Californian wine. There's a slight sweetness to the fruit as well as ripe tannins that never intrude. 1 Note

Castle Rock Pinot Noir -2008 (WE-104520)

Tastes harsh despite some nice cherry, mocha and sandalwood flavors. The problem is the tannins, which are uneven. 1 Note

Castle Rock Syrah -1999 (WE-11865)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Red berry and cocoa aromas and flavors that have real appeal are undone by a vegetal, green-olivey element. It’s a red that’s just too green, as noted elsewhere here. Decent palate texture and black and white pepper on the back end just can’t overtake the basic tart, green character. 1 Note

Castle Rock Zinfandel -1999 (WE-11866)

The mixed-berry bouquet is muted by a coating of white baking flour. More berry, plus black plum and oak flavors lead to any oaky-ashy finsh, punctuated by a light peppery twinge. 1 Note

Full and harmonious smelling, with berry fruit and leathery spice notes. Sweet and rich, with black cherry and chocolate flavors and a long, warm finish. This popular restaurant wine is rewarding but a bit sweet. Maybe that’s what people like so much about it…that and the cost. 1 Note
