Although early to be drinking this wine, it already shows a great deal of poise; a ripe, rich nose with thick textures opens the wine, intense aromas of chocolate, earth, licorice, tobacco, green peppers and tar, very perfumed, as the wine opens more, the nose also takes on wonderful aromas of violets and crushed rock; elegant and huge in the mouth; powerful flavors of chocolate and cassis, layers of black fruits, and powerful tannins; all of this is in a deep and brooding matrix of intense but balanced flavors that are beautifully integrated; time should make this a memorable Latour. A wine from a totally unheralded vintage, and the only bottle that I have seen in recent years; a classic Latour nose with ripe sweet fruit, lots of black fruits, cassis, quite sweet and rich actually, walnut shells, earth, chocolate; sweet on the entry, light and not with the layers of flavor that one expects from this wine; dry tannins, earth, not the depth of the good years, but a testament to the property for making a very good wine in a questionable vintage; good citric finish, light and simple, with a finish that drops off when it should keep going, but a wine that should not be treated cavalierly. Always a top wine in the vintage, this bottle is right there; sweet and ripe nose that has the typical Latour red earth and brick aromas mixed with a mélange of spicy fruit, caramel and peppery highlights, more restrained than some, still a powerful nose; sweet and ripe in the mouth with layers of red and black fruits, plums and cherries predominate, but there is a presence of limes and lemons; nice tannins, but not as intense or brooding as some Latours can be; this is a friendly and hedonistic Latour. In this format, the wine is still fresh and young, but with nicely evolved aromatics, very perfumed and floral, with wonderful aromas of caramel, chocolate, pepper, and earth, ripe and rich aromas; the body of the wine does not fully live up to the nose, but it does open sweet and ripe in the mouth; what is missing is power and fullness, as it drops off in the mid-mouth, seemingly light and a bit citric with dry, earthen edges; the finish is solid though, and there are good flavors that are all but classic; cranberries and sour cherries; hints of oriental spice; dry earthen tannins at the finish suggest drinking soon. Another property that produced a good wine in a difficult vintage; deeply aromatic with an earthen, truffled, set of aromas, chocolate and caramel, peppery, slightly roasted; sweet in the mouth; a bit thin, but still intact; peppery, spicy, elements of toffee, caramel; the finish is getting very dry and citric and there is not enough fruit in the wine to reverse the trend; drink soon. This wine, from a vintage that failed to produce many important wines in Bordeaux, keeps improving with age, and is now a fully developed and close to classic Latour; the nose is sweet and evolved with strong hints of earth and stone, tobacco, spices, touch of smokiness and herbs; sweet and ripe in the mouth, with plenty of black cherry, cassis, and hints of floral tones; not a complex wine, and certainly not a contender for top Latour honors, it has, nonetheless, developed a smooth texture with soft tannins and should be a good quaff for the next several years. A deep and rich nose opens this wine, very aromatic and expressive with deep aromas of cassis and black fruits, touches of earth and spice, quite sweet; big and powerful in the mouth, real Latour muscle here; layers of black fruits with incursions of lemons and earthy thick tannins; very focused at the finish with an ending of ripe earthen fruit; still one of the best of this vintage at this stage of its life. (18/20) Tasted several more times this year; the good bottles were consistent, but there were some very tired bottles that were inferior. 1 Note

This has been an acceptable Latour for many years now, but never viewed as one of the better; it is perhaps one of the best of Médocs from this vintage; rich ripe nose with intense aromas of black fruits, smoke and chocolate; deep and rich flavors, but they lack definitions; definitely diffuse in the mouth but rich; loads of cassis; a bit tired now, and also showing the effects of drying out; moderate finish, a bit coarse at the end. Always viewed as one of the best of the vintage, this bottle did not disappoint; wonderful rich nose of chocolate and cassis, earthen, red brick, touch of sweet lemons, mint; starts out very big in the mouth with deep flavors of ripe black fruits laced with chocolate; becomes a bit more dilute in the mid-mouth, but retains its balance and poise; more red fruits at the finish with red cherry and apple flavors mixing with a more earthen and primordial set of flavors; crystalline and pure. A powerful and intense wine, which is evident right from the start with a powerful nose, at first the nose is funky and barnyardy, and one fears for the bottle, but then the butterfly emerges from the cocoon and the nose becomes rich and sweet with powerful chocolate and caramel aromas, dense and ripe with complex aromas of leather, earth, cassis, smoke; huge in the mouth with an almost port-like flavor and consistency of ripe black fruits, great ripe tannins, but at the same time good citrus fruit to add zest and freshness; deep and brooding at the end with a powerful grip on the palate.
