This straight-ahead bottling from the Loosen brothers is simply labeled Riesling.It has a surprisingly rich nose with hints of hay, diesel and citrus, while the palate shows ripe, concentrated yellow fruits. Low in alcohol (8.5%) and modest in price, this is a perfect introduction to Mosel Riesling and a great everyday wine for our Chardonnay-obsessed land. Best Buy. 1 Note

Good solid stuff with a bit of funk to keep things interesting. A cheesy note on the nose gives way to melon and sweet corn flavors and a tangy finish. —J.C. 1 Note

Seems a bit sweeter than it has been in other recent vintages, but still hits the right notes. Green apple and grapefruit aromas segue into apple and citrus flavors tinged with a bit of red berry fruit. A bit of unreleased CO2 helps to balance the sugar levels; drink over the next six months or so while it remains fresh. 1 Note

As a simple summer quaffer, this wine fits the bill. It's off-dry and slightly plump in the mouth, with citrusy flavors that range from grapefruit through orange to tangerine. Short on the finish. 1 Note

Ernst Loosen’s big-production wine is a smashing success in 2002, a bit shy on the nose, but possessing a well-balanced blend of apples, pears and citrus fruits on the palate. Its soft, talcum-powder-like texture and touch of sweetness make it easy to like, the balancing acidity makes it easy to drink. 1 Note

The name translates as “the slate of Bernkastel” and this wine lives up to its name. Peachy-tropical ripe fruit is offset nicely by the pronounced mineral scent and texture, and a slight spritz. The stony side of its nature glides into a chalk-tinged, palate-cleansing finish with sweet pear flavors. 1 Note

Dr. L has developed into the sort of consistent, large-production wine consumers can depend on when faced with an otherwise unknown array of wines. The 2009 is off dry, with crisp acidity, lime and pineapple flavors and a mouthwatering finish. Drink it over the next year or so. 1 Note
