Lots of yeast and lees at first, but still tight, with apple, peach and melon flavors. Turns more toasty and yeasty as it opens, with a hint of dried herbs. A controlled buttery note makes for a fine final impression. One of Freixenet’s best. 1 Note

Tart and sour, with unripe apple flavors joined by earth and saddle leather. 1 Note

Some soft-plastic or rubber notes blow off with air, leaving behind sour ginger and floral aromas. Sweet pear and orange flavors are soft and low-acid, finishing short and smooth. 1 Note

This affordable sparkler starts off with odd, funky aromas that suggest bananas and mushy papaya. The flavors aren’t bad, but the wine is austere and awkward, with a rough texture that offers little pleasure. It’s just drinkable. 1 Note

Shows an appealing earthy-chalky note alongside daisies and fresh ginger that gives this Cava more complexity than most others. Spicy and earthy on the finish. 1 Note

The nose is bright, bordering on sharp. It carries a note of medicine, yeast and even celery. Lemon, orange and melon flavors work well together, and it as a whole it seems to be snappy and fresh at all points. —M.S. 1 Note

Chalky, lemony aromas and slightly buttery yellow plum flavors give this bargain bubbly more pop than pretty much anything else in this price range. Even the dry, lime-tinged finish sparkles. It’s light and not particularly complex, but it’s still a steal. 1 Note

A pleasant, softly fruity bubbly with a tad more sweetness than you’d think from “Extra Dry.” It has some pretty flavors of apple juice with a dash of lime. Crisp acidity and fine, distinct bubbles keep things lively and fresh with this very clean crowd-pleaser of a wine. 1 Note

A pronounced scent of lilacs marks the nose of this wine, making it distinctive, to say the least. It’s more traditional in its flavors, with some herbal and strawberry nuances. Finishes a bit short and ever-so-slightly sweet, but a decent quaff. 1 Note
