A really complex and enticing nose, wonderfully perfumed with an initial aroma of roses, then more cacao, sweet herbs, fresh-mown hay, meat, and coal tar; sweet fruit in the front of the mouth; complex and deep; powerful citrus core; lots of herbs and sour cherries; crabapples; quite sophisticated and elegant; long finish, still quite young and immature but with a wonderful dry lemon flavor and texture. The nose on this wine opens with a shot of perfumed aromas that are sweet and ripe, characterized by rich chocolate aromas, but also with plenty of complexity in the form of green herbs, floral scents, and hints of ripe black fruits; sweet and ripe in the mouth as these wines can be; great concentration of citrus fruit with dry tannins and earthy textures; a tapestry of sauvage elements in the big, expressive finish. One of my favorite wines from the Rhône, and for me the highlight of my Bacchus Rhône evening, this bottle repeats that experience opening with a deep and rich nose that is both exotic and complex with aromas of oriental spice, leather, black fruit, tar, powdered chocolate and milk chocolate; always profound in the mouth, this wine has that incredible deep fruit that seems bottomless; rich and ripe black cherries mixed with kirsch and herbs; more tannins than I remember assert themselves in the mouth as the wine expands to fill in the nooks and crannies; the finish becomes hot and dry, and unfortunately loses for the wine some of the early seductiveness; still a real statement of the art. Now fully mature, the wine is loaded with aromas of leather, tar, cassis, rocks, and smoke, deep and rich nose, quite powerful; same in the mouth, evidencing lots of concentrated fruit, mostly black cherry, but also plum and tobacco flavors; black licorice and deep but now softened tannins maintain a nice balance with citrus acidity that has depth without sharpness; good now and I suspect for several years to come. First whiff is all blackberries and blueberries, but then the nose becomes more elegant and refined with aromas of leather, cherry, hints of lilac; very refined in the mouth, a lighter, more refined style than is found in the likes of Jaboulet or Chave, the wine is nonetheless loaded with expression; balanced fruit, touch of herbs, pepper, very clean and fresh in the mouth, almost “Burgundian” in some sense; long finish that never loses its focus; wonderful wine. Wonderful rich and ripe nose of sweet cherries mixed with damp earth, leather, black pepper, spices and quite floral and effusive at the finish; sweet and ripe in the mouth, classic for this region; the wine expands in the mouth and would continue to do so indefinitely, but is pulled back abruptly by big drying tannins that swat the fruit in the nose; the wine keeps going though with sour cherry and citric acidity to finish with a clean, spicy finish emblematic of this wine. (18/20) I had the wine again at the Sotheby’s dinner later in the year with consistent notes. 1 Note

Much too early to be drinking this wine, the nose is light and faint, and totally closed down, there are emerging aromas of green herbs, paraffin, soapstone, and light lemony fruit; sweet and smooth in the mouth, put this wine on botox; there are no defined lines yet and the face of this wine is smooth and almost expressionless; more time in the glass begins to bring out the sweetness and lemony flavors, good spices, lemon peel; the texture of this wine shows the presence of lots of glycerol with hints of licorice, signaling very good things ahead, but not yet. Powerful nose of sweet and honeyed fruit, raisins, beeswax, very perfumed and floral, enticing and seductive; sweet and ripe in the mouth; honeyed, floral flavors that show a lot of complexity and sophistication; thick but fresh; long finish with powerful acidity that provides focus and definition; smooth and fresh. (16.5/20) Another bottle at the OxFam dinner was consistent in most respects, but the alcohol was more in evidence. 1 Note

Hermitage Hermitage Chave -1998

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Sweet and intense nose with a strong touch of honey, licorice, green herbs and pepper; smooth and ripe in the mouth, rich flavors; a bit dense as these wines tend to be, but also expressive; good lemony flavors add freshness, and there is a spiciness redolent of ground white pepper; ripe and silky at the end.
