A surprising misstep from this fine winery and consulting winemaker Ben Glaetzer. The characteristic Mitolo/Glaetzer creamy-textured tannins are there, but the flavors are a bit simple and grapy, marked by peppery, leafy notes. It is awfully young, so maybe it will pull together in a another few months. 1 Note

Cotton candy and bubblegum aromas of cool fermentation and cultured yeasts are pleasant, and the bright pink color is striking. But the flavors are relatively modest, offering little more than crisp acid refreshment. 1 Note

Mitolo has the right idea here, delivering a suave, balanced, medium-sized Shiraz, en screwcap, for only 20 bucks. It has chalky, smooth tannins and undrestated black fruit dusted with mocha. Sees a surge of clay, and a flash of eucalyptus, on the finish. There's a little alcoholic warmth on the nose, but it's a balls-on solid wine overall. 1 Note

Consulting winemaker Ben Glaetzer has fashioned a reasonably full-bodied Cab for the Mitolo family, one that combines some superripe, verging on raisined, elements with hints of tobacco and herbs. Mint, cassis and chocolate round out the palate, finishing softly tannic. Drink now–2010. 1 Note

Although a very good wine, this is a bit disappointing coming from winemaker Ben Glaetzer. Blackberry preserve flavors are soft and full-bodied without being especially rich or deep, with hints of vanilla and fresh grasses. Finishes fresh, with tart berry flavors. 1 Note

At only 10% alcohol, this Vermentino actually comes across a bit Riesling-like, with green apple and citrus flavors and a lingering, crisp finish. Drink now. 1 Note

Crisp black cherry and mint aromas burst from the glass, then carry over onto the chunky, authoritative palate before finishing slightly dusty and astringent. This medium-bodied Cabernet features plenty of intensity, it just needs a little time to settle down into a more refined package. 1 Note

Impressively textured for such an inexpensive Shiraz, Mitolo’s 2007 Jester is a concentrated, slightly smoky, black-olive laced wine. Briny, smoky, savory notes would pair well with herbed leg of lamb. Drink now–2015. 1 Note

In the heat of the 2008 vintage, it may have been a mistake to further dry 20% of the grapes for this wine. The result has turned out chocolaty-ripe, but also with a touch of raisining evident, and while there’s volume, there’s also a certain lack of midpalate richness. 1 Note
