Peg Bay's Maestro is only bottled in the best vintages, the last being 1998, a wine that continues to age beautifully. In 2001, it's predominantly (75%) Merlot, with the remainder mainly Malbec (15%), with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Combines toasty new oak with cassis and dried spices in a medium-weight wine, then adds an explosive, tobacco-laden finish. Not available in the US. 1 Note

Aromas of toast, apricot, mint, honey and field dust make for a complex bouquet. The honeyed palate yields a trace of green herbs along with lemon rind and white pepper. Obviously there’s a lot going on here, and for some it may be too “out there.” For others it will be a spot-on Kiwi offering with lots of individuality and character. 1 Note

A rich, mouthcoating, viscous style, with 24% Sémillon blended in and kept on the lees for nine months prior to bottling. Honeyed stone fruits (plum and peach) and its round, supple nature make it easy to drink. 1 Note

Ripe apples and pears are accented by orange-blossoms in this opulent and open-knit Riesling. Lush and viscous, it also has a subtle undercurrent of lime-like acidity that keeps it from being fat. Residual sugar seems to be about Spätlese level. 1 Note

Perplexing, given the superb performance of the 2005, but this wine is not on that level. There’s a smoky note to this edition that brings hints of cured meat or beef bouillon to mind, adding a strange note to the herbal, citrusy flavors. 1 Note

Peg Bay continues to push the ripeness envelope on its Rieslings. The 2006 is honeyed and rather sweet, with baked apple flavors at the core, surrounded by hints of spice and apricot. Lime-like acids seem a bit strident on the finish right now; give it a couple of years in the cellar. Imported by Meadowbank Estates. 1 Note

Smells fresh enough to make your mouth water, filled with scents of lime zest and green apples. On the palate, it’s nicely balanced, not as rich or sweet as a tank sample of the ’05, but crisp and elegant, with superb concentration. 1 Note
