Has a beautiful bouquet, loaded with smoky oak and vanilla and the lushest, ripest pears. But the flavors aren’t quite as rich: It turns citrusy in the mouth, with a creamy texture. Very clean and tart on the finish. —S.H. 1 Note

Smoke and dried spice notes define the nose of the Kings Ridge Reserve Cab. Medium- to full-bodied and more firmly structured than the Nuns Canyon bottling, with black cherry and coffee flavors that merge seamlessly with earth and spice notes. Chewy tannins on the finish suggest short-term cellaring; try in 2008. 1 Note

Sweetish and simple, it has some thin but ripe flavors of peaches, and quite a dose of oak. The wood adds spicy, smoky and vanilla notes, but they’re not integrated. Finishes sappy and sugary. —S.H. 1 Note

Fun easy drinking wine. Dry with a woody character, cherries and mild tannins. Good value for only $13. 1 Note

High in acidity, almost sour despite complete malo, this is a very dry wine, and it’s thin in fruity flavor. Will do in a pinch, but you can do better for the money. 1 Note

Pizza, lasagna, cheeseburgers and similar fare come to mind when tasting this simple country wine. It’s rustic in tannins, with ripe cherry-berry and cocoa flavors, and very clean. 1 Note
