Given the steep slopes of the region and resulting high production costs, it’s a mystery to me how proprietor Nik Weis has managed to keep his wines so affordable. The least expensive of his 2005s is a great introduction to the wines of the Mosel, with surprising minerality and precision for a wine that savvy shoppers can find for as little as $10. It’s crisp and clean, lightly sweet, but balanced by fine acidity. It’s delicate, yet full of flavor. 1 Note

A very young, yeasty, bready wine with rich, fat fruit with only light balancing acidity. It shows youth, but doesn’t have great potential for development. 1 Note

Relatively full-bodied, even though the alcohol is only 10%, this shows a touch of the botrytis influence of the vintage, with apricot notes adding interest to the straightforward melon and herb flavors. Finishes soft; drink now. 1 Note

There is light, easily sweet fruit, but it is spoilt by clumsy flavors and sulphur. 1 Note

This wine doesn’t have the easy elegance of Nik Weis’s best vintages, but it still packs in plenty of mineral-tinged apple and citrus flavor. Give it a year or two to come together, then drink it over the next five. 1 Note

The fresh, lively mouthfeel and crisp lemon, grapefruit and green apple flavors more than make up for an offputting sulfur smell when the bottle is first opened. Airing it before tasting, or aging it another six months or more should be all the help it needs. —J.C. 1 Note

The palate is clean, fresh, softly sweet rather than intense. Flavors of ripe plums and currants give it an attractive directness and simplicity. It could age, but only in the medium-term. 1 Note
