Showing fine quality, this Verdejo-Sauvignon Blanc-Viura blend satisfies with a fragrant melon and grass nose, a full round palate showing grapefruit, herb and melon flavors, and a clean, long finish. It is the house white wine at New York’s exclusive seafood restaurant Le Bernardin, and no wonder, considering its attributes. Best Buy. 1 Note

One of the tastiest, best-made value whites in the world remains Basa, a blend of Verdejo, Viura and Sauvignon Blanc. Since bursting onto the wine scene in the late ’90s, Basa, which means “base” or “foundation” in Spanish, has never failed to excel. In the 2002 version, winemaker Telmo Rodriguez, who began his career at his father’s Remelluri estate in Rioja, has managed to capture the purest grapefruit, passion fruit and citrus flavors, all the while creating a wine with body, bracing acids and simple joy. A surefire apéritif, and also a fine bet for salads or fish. 1 Note

This Alicante red from Telmo Rodriguez is a giant with grapy, medicinal aromas followed by huge plum and blackberry flavors. This broad, mildly tannic red with tons of finishing coffee and leather notes fits the bill. 1 Note

Fresh and flavorful, this light Garnacha with its juicy red-fruit flavors and lively spiciness is a fine choice for a picnic or the patio. The bright finish shows surprising length for a relatively casual offering. A fine choice for carefree consumption. 1 Note

For several years running, one of our favorite bargain whites has been Basa. This ’05 is still kicking with citrus and tropical-fruit aromas as well as defined flavors of pink grapefruit, melon and green herbs. With minerality and white pepper on the finish, it has closing complexity. 1 Note

Ultrajammy, with intense ruby color and in-your-face grapiness, it’s hard to find more extraction at this price. Light- to medium-bodied, this is an easy-drinking but densely aromatic and flavorful red that is not at all inconsequential. It wraps up with a brisk, clean, dry finish showing light tannins. 1 Note

Dark, modern and a tiny bit funky. The round palate boasts medium-strength plum and berry, while the finish is defined by vanilla and warmth. Nothing special but good in this price range. 1 Note
