Starts out beautifully, with grassy, sweet-pea aromas mixed in with some hay. Cleansing lemon-lime flavors in the mouth mellow out on the finish, where lemon pith lingers. Zingy half the time; understated for the remainder. 1 Note

A very good wine, and not a blend that you see often from South Australia. Has chewy, smooth tannins and serious black plum at its core, with fresh herb and soil notes on the palate. Finishes isn’t a grand finale—it fades to black subtly. 23% Cabernet Franc. 1 Note

Only 6% Viognier, and only 1,000 cases produced, this wine won numerous trophies at Australian wine shows at the end of last year. An excellent wine, one in which black pepper flavors and aromas are so prevalent that drinking it with anything other than steak au poivre seems criminal. Smooth on palate entry; plum fruit and eucalyptus prevail through the finish. 1 Note

A textbook Coonawarra Cab, with taut red fruit and dry, claylike tannins. A little herb shows on the nose and on the finish. Tasty, and classy. 1 Note

This wine could be a challenge to find (1,000 cases produced), but it's a value worth seeking out. The nose shows just light biscuity aromas, and the palate, pear, peach and bread flour flavors. it's dry, even minerally, in the mouth. Not profound, but enjoyable and easy to drink. 1 Note

The Australian equivalent of California’s Chandon, or Mumm Napa: it’s an inexpensive, please-everyone, enjoyable wine, with yellow fruit, dust and a dry mouthfeel. Middle of the road in the best sense—it’s not “too” anything to be at all disagreeable. 1 Note

Year in year out a winning Riesling, the 2001 sports a handsome new package. On par with the fine 2000, but a touch softer, especially on the muted hay and vanilla nose. Turns crisper in the mouth with fine green apple and grapefruit flavors. It’s finely balanced and sports a long, clean finish. 1 Note

A fruity, balanced red from an ever-reliable producer. Firm red plum and cherry fruit has grip on the palate; it’s medium-bodied, with oak and nut flavors, and ginger-nut accents on the nose. It’s noticeably more sophisticated—less sweetness, less vanilla, more heft—than most Shiraz-Cabs in the under-$10 category. 1 Note
