We often think of celebrity chefs of having grown up in Manhattan or Paris or Los Angeles. Not Nate Appleman: this “Rising Star” (San Francisco Chronicle’s) and a “Best New Chef of 2009” (Food and Wine Magazine) comes from a small town in Ohio. And he’s achieved all this before the ripe old age of 30.
Nate’s love of food blossomed early in the kitchens of his mother and grandmother. Since entering a professional kitchen at the tender age of 14, he has not left. A skilled butcher, Appleman literally serves up the whole hog (and cow, and lamb, and…) at his popular restaurants, A16 and SPQR. This Star chef recently co-wrote the fabulous A16 Food and Wine cookbook with top sommelier Shelley Lindgren, bringing the food and wine of southern Italy into any home kitchen. The cookbook showcases Appleman’s deep love for Italian food, through pictures and recipes; The Daily Sip™ recommends it as an excellent reference for anyone interested in beginning the journey into Southern Italian cuisine.
In his home life, Chef Appleman is a true family man and would rather cook for his son than anyone else in the world. His top advice for life? “Be happy.” Ours: follow the Appleman.
