Living The Dream

How many people have experiences at high school dances that impact their career? Maybe we all identified with the teenage drama in Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off or The Breakfast Club, but Simon Fell, winemaker for Thornbury (one of the iconic brands in the Villa Martina family), has a real-life high school dance story: there, drinking Asti Spumante, his curiosity in wine was first seriously piqued.

After completing a wine science diploma in Auckland, New Zealand (where he was raised) his winemaking career took him on a journey around the world, to winemaking hot spots such as Central Otago, Oregon, Bordeaux, Western Australia and California.

Simon’s favorite wine memory would surely resonate with Miles in Sideways: “Sharing a bottle of 1997 Opus One and eating a Burrito in the back seat of the car with a couple of friends watching the sun go down over the Napa Valley.” Enviable indeed.

With this backdrop, it’s no surprise that Simon’s motto for enjoying life is, “Live life to the full, live on the edge.” Fitting for a Kiwi.
