Usually when we see the name of a wine region, we’re pretty quick to guess just what country it comes from. Sometimes it requires that you wrack your brain to recall some middle school French or harken back to a few words you picked up while traveling in Germany. Either way, you can typically put your thumb on the wine's country of origin at the very least.
But Getariako Txakolina?
With only 200 hectares of vineyards, this Denominación de Origen is tucked away in the coastal province of Guipozkoa in the Basque country of Spain. The hilly countryside is famous for its intense greenery, spotted with farms and traditional Basque villages. Here you’ll find wine like nowhere else.
Two native grapes, Hondarrabi Zuri (white) and Hondarrabi Beltzi (red) produce the slightly effervescent wine typical of the region. The beautiful, sparkling, light wines are perfect to sip with a Spanish sunset on your mind...or in view.
The Daily Sip recently tasted the Ameztoi Rubentis 2008, a lovely rosé from Getariako Txakolina. With bright fruits and an undertone of fresh lime, it’s a satisfying apértif.
