Hollywood and Vine
L.A.'s only winery makes a coveted cuvée.
Tonight, the cool crowd in L.A. will be at h.wood for Bottlenotes' Around the World in 80 Sips tasting. Hundreds of fun people, dozens of wines from some of the planet's best producers and regions--what could be better?
That got us thinking about other exclusive L.A. wine experiences; one of the granddaddies of them all is just a few miles away from h.wood, in elite neighborhood Bel-Air. There lies Moraga Vineyards, the only commercial winery that's right in Los Angeles.
If 80 Sips L.A. is the Fresh Prince, Moraga is Carlton. The price for half a case of the Bordeaux-style red is $750, and just as if Moraga were another Hollywood club, you'll have to spend a long time waiting in line--on the mailing list--before you can even get your hands on a bottle. One can't even go visit Moraga's 16-acre vineyard--no tastings or tours. Then again, what else would you expect in a gated community where walking is discouraged?
Credit where it's due, though: Moraga is made by some honest, old-school, California born-and-raised farmers who've been in the area for decades. And if the wine were no good, it wouldn't be so hard to get it, right? Then again, hanging out with other wine lovers at a cool Hollywood club isn't so shabby, either.
If you've tasted Moraga, we want to know if it's worth the wait. Give us your impressions of the wine below.
