After great success with his first wine label, the ultra premium Hundred Acre in Napa Valley, Jayson Woodbridge set out to prove he could make a wine that costs $15-$30 but tastes like a $60-$70 bottle. A worthy endeavor if ever there was one!
The resulting brand, “Layer Cake Wines,” finds its inspiration in something Jayson’s grandfather used to tell him: that a great bottle should be like his Grandmother’s layer cake, filled with fruit, chocolate, mocha and spice. Each Layer Cake wine is produced from a different grape varietal, from a unique growing region around the globe. Each certainly exceeds its price tag in value.
You shouldn’t have trouble finding Layer Cake in your area. While we recommend you give each one a try, we are partial to the 2007 Primitivo from Puglia, Italy ($15.99). A full, rich, basket of blackberries, cherries and plums, this wine will quickly satisfy the lover of California Zins, but stays true to its European roots with balanced acidity, tannin and layers of leather and earth.
