One of my favorite white wine producers in the world. ZH's wines are always rich and complex. Much darker than a typical Pinot Blanc, this wine looks more like a Chardonnay. It has a lush and full mouth feel with apple, pineapple, hints of white peach followed by a touch of acidity on the finish. Went perfectly with my whole branzino at Chaya in SF. In general would go nicely with heavier seafood dishes or chicken.

The 3rd and final Riesling in our blind taste test is from Alsace, France. For those that are used to German Rieslings, you'll find Alsace Rieslings to be quite different even though they're literally right across the river from each other. Alsace Rieslings are not as sweet as German Rieslings and this particular one is a bit more acidic and citrus forward rather than the usual honey, apples, peaches and pears offered in their German counterparts. Our testers agreed across the board that the color was quite pale, the bouquet light, and the style crisp. The tasters agreed that it was citrus dominated but split between lemon/lime and grapefruit. All agreed the sweetness was off-dry to dry with high acidity and a monotonous complexity. All three were in agreement with a solid finish. With scores of 71, 73, and 82, the average score of 75 described this Riesling as ordinary as table wine can get. In all fairness to Alsace, our tasters were German Riesling fans and I threw in the French version to show them that the same grape in a different terroir can yield a completely different flavor and aroma.

Light straw yellow in color, tart yellow apple in flavor. Bright acidity- classically Alsatian in that way. Tasty wine.#bottlenotes

Temperature is key here. This wine opened up nicely when it left the refrigerator behind and warmed up a few degrees. Paired well with a young soft cheese like burrata.

Classic nose of vinyl and sweet fruit, but simple and without the tropical fruits that one often finds in these wines; pretty much the same in the mouth; there is a good smooth sweetness to the wine, offset by enough dry lemony flavors to keep the wine from tipping over into irrelevance, but the total effect is weak and uninteresting; pretty two-dimensional and flat. Dry nose with surprisingly austere aromas, steely, minerally, but at the same time has a nice floral and sweet fruit essence, hints of tarragon, of course, there is the presence of rubber to remind one of the grape; smooth in the mouth, but has a hard inner core that is steely and laced with dry acidity; there is plenty of sweet and spicy notes in the wine though, and it has plenty of lemon and spice to satisfy the more hedonistic; the wine gets richer in the glass, and it is obvious that more bottle time is needed for the wine to show its full potential. Opens with a very light and reticent nose, distant aromas that seem to be struggling to emerge, but there is a touch of citrus fruit and minerals, as the wine opens more in the glass, there emerge rich aromas of melons and cantaloupes mixed with the exotic aromas of various tropical fruits; sweet in the front of the mouth, but then there is a lightning strike of acidity that produces intense lemon flavors etched with minerals and cold steel; this is a powerful wine that evokes a much bigger statement than many of the wines of this area. The nose is very reticent at first, hiding the aromas of the wine, but then it slowly opens up to reveal a rich and ripe nose of melons and tropical fruits, sugar building in intensity in the glass; ripe and rich fruit, lots of melon flavors mixed with honey and touches of lemon juice; really focused and intense but at the same time round and almost oily with tons of glycerin; very long finish; never loses a step to the last drop. This rare wine from the cellars of Washington Park Restaurant, very concentrated nose, raisins and vanilla, sugared fruit, powerful aromatics, touch of rubber bands in the nose; sweet and intense, very concentrated and sweet, almost cloying, but saved by a beautiful structure; spicy with the flavors of golden raisins; unctuous and mouth-coating, this is not a wine for everyone as I suspect that many might find it too much of a good thing; long sugary finish with endless layers of flavors; a unique experience for sure. Very perfumed and aromatic, sweet and raisiny nose, plenty of herbs and minerals though, and there is a depth and complexity that goes beyond the initial typical perfume and exotic fruit aromas; intense and sweet in the glass, but with restrained qualities that provide a sense of elegance and refinement; lots of minerals in this wine, and a touch of what can only be described as austerity that plays off nicely against the fruit and opulence; long finish, smooth and viscous without being cloying; nicely defined acidity at the end. Wonderful, powerful aromas of sweet tropical fruit, spices, white flowers, lemon and other citrus fruits; deep and rich in the mouth; the first flavors are of apricots and white peaches; liquid fruit compote but also with a wonderful core of citrus and spice; ripe and fleshy, almost fat, but keeps itself fully composed throughout; balanced and complex; long finish, sweet but also with dry tones and a lemon peel complement.
