90-92 Barrel sample. Very rich in character, but on the dry side, a solid, almost chunky wine, showing depth of spice, apricot and honeyed apple.

From a property run by Michel and Dany Rolland, this is a firm wine; structured, but with a velvet sheen that exudes ripeness and style. The tell-tale 2004 fresh acidity keeps the wine on its toes.

The aromas are dominated by spicy wood, and at this young stage in the wine’s evolution that is the same for the taste. The fruit, juicy black currants, is struggling to come through. Give it 3–4 years.

All about red fruits, this is a celebration of ripe Merlot and Cabernet. It is touched with wood, but the flavors are of lively acidity, red berries, just showing some bitter chocolate. And to finish, more freshness.

90-92 Barrel sample. This has all the flavors of an Asian kitchen, spices dominant and, underneath, some attractive lemon and honey botrytis. This should be a great aperitif style of wine.

Ripe, sweet wine, flavored with sweet spices, pears and dried apricots. It has just a hint of botrytis, more of sweetness and attractive richness. There is light acidity, which gives a final lift.

Owned by négociant firm Dourthe, La Garde has developed hugely in recent years both for red and white wines. This white from 2003 is certainly rich, a product of the hot summer, but it shows good balance from the light touch of vanilla wood flavors, creamed apples and some good tannic structure. Age over the next five years.

87-89 This is a very elegant wine, not at all powerful. The fruit is sweet, dominating the dry tannins.

Made by the same team as Château Pichon Lalande, this is a tensely textured, austere wine, still young when tasted, but showing good potential to develop into elegance, with black fruit and dense tannins blending easily into fresh acidity. Age for 4–5 years.

Ripe, rich wine from a great Sauternes year. It has sweetness, but this is tempered with a fine layer of dry botrytis, dried fruits and nutmeg. The texture opens out to a fresh finish.
