appearance: medium intensity, with a very light garnet color. nose: clean with high intensity, and aromas of wet leaves, dark raspberries, milk-chocolate, and somewhat perfumey. palate: medium-dryness, with low acid, average tannins and body. flavors of cranberries, sour cherry, and watermelon. the length was really good. overall: not the most complex burgundy out there. having said that, it does have excellent fruit. the mouthfeel is lush, and the finish is very long. one-dimensional as it is, but that one dimension is excellent. on an off-year, this wine may have been too boring, but 05' made even average wines very good. i give it a 90.

The typical fat, buttery flavors are balanced here by elegance and freshness. With its honey, melon and pear tastes, come fresh acidity and a underlying layer of vanilla from the wood.

A very appealing dark berry, violet and game nose opens this dense, smooth wine. But the wood sits heavily on the ripe, plush (for Gamay) fruit. This has fine texture and good length, but the palate never quite shows what the aromas promise at the very strong start. If this opens with another year or two of aging, it has the potential to shine.

Aromas of roses and hedgerow fruits make this an attractive wine. To taste, it is savory, with ripe fruits that are balanced by solid tannins. A layer of dryness suggests this could age—give it five years before opening.

Big, bold wine, ripe fruits pushed forward by wood, some spice, rich in character. This is lush Chardonnay, but with a good mineral edge.

Aged in wood, this cuvée is powerful, ripe and intense. The jellied red fruits are all sweet and rich, touched by acidity but mainly with good depth of flavor and structure. It would even be worth aging this for another year.

The steep Cazetiers vineyard is among the best of Gevrey’s Premier Crus. This is a robust wine that can take all the wood thrown at it and still come back tasting of sweet plums and fresh raspberries. The tannins, with their smoky character, shine right through the heart of the wine.

A beautifully crisp, steely wine, initially delicate, then revealing depths of citrus and green plum flavors with light toast and the freshest acidity. There is a final spice from wood and tight structure from the fruit. Imported by Robert Kacher Imports.

A good-buy, large-market wine and a great indicator of the potential of the ’98 white Burgundies. Well-defined yet harmonious apple, citrus, and nutty components throughout. Quite precise and not at all chunky and clumsy; well balanced, with clean fruit persisting to the end. Will handle foods like fish and chicken perfectly.
